5 out of 5 stars Happy with what we've got in this package   September 6, 2008
Renee C. Mulhare (MA United States)
Season 3 was to date, one of the best-written seasons of this top-notch series which just gets better and better from one year to the next. Eric Kripke and his writers keep raising the bar for themselves and they always clear it with room to spare. It was a little frustrating that the series got truncated due to the writer's strike last year, but all around, it was a solid season. The character development was top-drawer: Dean's deal with the Crossroads Demon forces him to reassess himself and confront his own mortality, while Sam has slowly start to toughen up inside, as he faces the prospect of a life without his big brother. And how Kripke and company are going to top the literal end-up-in-hell cliffhanger at the end of the season, and move on from there in Season 4 is going to be exciting to watch.

I'm a little sad to see no full-length audio commentaries for any episodes, but the Special features which this set offers are just as good, particulalarly the feature on the make-up and VFX and the segment on the several black 1967 Chevy Impalas used for the "Metallicar" we know and love, and the spolight segments on several episodes.

And if I had to pick a favorite episode this season, I'd be very hard-put to make a definate list of them, since this was such a solid season. "The Kids Are All Right" brought in an interesting take on changelings, which I never expected to see on this series; "A Very Supernatural Christmas" was a great, wonderfully twisted holiday offering; "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was a great reality-bender and gave you some insights on the most hidden little corners of the psyches of three of our main characters (as well as showing us the backstory on Bobby Singer); "Mystery Spot" had me giggling and wincing through the whole episode; and nothing can top the cliffhanger ending of "No Rest for the Wicked": I'm wondering just what Kripke and company are going to throw at the boys at the end of next season!

5 out of 5 stars Supernatural Is Always A Hit   September 5, 2008

So i just recieved mine in the mail today since i preordered it i ended up paying $36.99 which is great considering everywhere else its being listed as 38 or 39 dollars. i cant wait to start watching all the episodes. ive already got the first two seasons which ive watched all the way through and even got my boyfriend to watch a few episodes with me :) but now ive finally got the 3rd season so i can finally catch up on it. unfortunately i missed alot of episodes for this season because of work but the ones i did get to catch were great! i really disliked Bella, she just didnt work for me in this show, but Ruby, i really loved Ruby i thought she really added something extra to the show and Katie Cassidy did a good job portraying her. The episode i most look forward to watching is Bad Day At Black Rock. I just couldnt stop laughing during that episode! Sam losing his shoe, Dean tossing the pen into the gun barrel and saying "im Batman"...PRICELESS!!! lol gotta love the Winchester boys! Although the writers strike killed this season having a few more episodes (THANKS ALOT! GRRR) it still seemed to be able to make it through. They seemed to understand not to cut down on quality and have one of those crappy season finales because they didnt have enough episodes to get it to become a great one, no they overcame it and still ended it with a bang! and a very shocking one at that. like i said, i did miss quite a few episodes but this is one of my 3 favorite shows of all time (Roswell & Veronica Mars being the other 2) and i am soooo glad that we didnt end up with this being the last season for the show. finally a show that i love has broken the 3 season curse!

4 out of 5 stars Shorter season due to Writer's Strike doesn't effect the top notch quality of season 3   September 5, 2008
Wayne Klein (My Little Blue Window, USA)
Hunting monsters isn't easy but when you've got a year to live because you've made a deal with the Devil to save your brother, well, it just makes it that much tougher. Add in a lady Demon who chooses to help the guys and a woman competing with them for supernatural artifacts named Bela Talbot (a clever tip of the hat to Bela Lugosi and Lawrence Talbot the former a horror movie icon the latter the name of the character played by Lon Chaney, Jr. in "The Wolf Man") and you've got a fun season. The third season of "Supernatural" was shorter than the first two because of the Writer's Strike but the writing, direction, performances, twists and turns and third season story arc make the third season just as compelling as the first two. A lot of shows seem to jump the shark by their third season but the show has a preternatural ability to avoid shark infested waters other TV shows fall into (yes, "The X-Files" I'm looking at you).

Sam and Dean Winchester face new monsters and demonns in some clever stories. The Christmas episode involving what appears to be Santa's Evil Brother (it's much more complex than that because, well, this is "Supernatural" and nothing is simple)and the return of Gordon the "Hunter" out to get Sam because he believes him to be the anti-Christ are both highlights of this short season.

We get all 16 episodes in a nice, natural looking transfer. The show is shot in HD so there are occasional bits of video noise but it's nothing distracting. Audio sounds terrific particularly during action scenes.

You can skip the intro on each episode if you want. We get deleted scenes for a number of episodes as well as seven featurettes on the challenges of producing that episode told from the point-of-view of one of the behind-the-scenes talent including visual effects, etc. There are no commentary tracks this time around. You also have the option of downloading all 16 episodes to your computer via digital copies of the show that are will work with iTunes. You can only do it once (obviously to prevent you from giving it to your friends, etc.)and the code included is on a sheet of paper so don't loose it. This might be a nice feature for those on the go since they can download it and then hook up their iPod to a TV or watch them while traveling.

All in all the third season is a heck of a ride and worth picking up even though there are less episodes here. It would have been nice if Warner had reduced the price accordingly but I've found that studios rarely if ever do that.

5 out of 5 stars Best Season To Date!   September 2, 2008

Last time we saw Sam and Dean Winchester, they had just vanquished the yellow-eyed demon is, but at a terrible price. The battle that brought him down released hundreds of demons from Hell into an unsuspecting world. It cost Sam his life. But a grief-stricken Dean made a deal with the Crossroad Demo -- his soul for Sam's resurrection. Now Dean has just one year to live; one year to fight the unholy, the twisted, the ghoulish; one year to say farewell to Sam; and one year for Sam to search desperately for some way to save his brother's soul from eternal damnation.

The five-disc collector's set features all 16 one-hour episodes, all the classic rock and roll you come to expect from the show, and over an hour of special features never-before-seen bonus material, including a brand-new special effects featurette, gag reel, and commentaries -- plus the chance to download digital copies of the entire season for free from iTunes.

With the 2007 writers' strike that occurred in Hollywood, one would think that this season of Supernatural would be very week and just serve as a minor story arc until Season four came around. However, this is not the case! Supernatural Season three in my opinion is the shows strongest season show, highlighting a great new cast of characters, including Bela (Lauren Chan), and Ruby (Katie Cassidy).

Throughout the year, if you have been following the online community, you will have probably read the general distaste for Lauren Chan and her character, Bela. However, I differ from the majority and find her to be a major asset to the show. She is clever, cunning, and you are always unsure of what side she is truly on (besides her own).

Probably the weakest episode of the bunch is "Ghostfacers!". While this is a wink and nod at all the reality shows on television, I really thought that is was unnecessary since this was such an abbreviated season anyway with the writer's strike.

Supernatural: The Complete Third Season hits shelves just in time and is a great way for fans to catch up with the Winchester brothers before the paranormal journey returns with the season four premiere later on this fall on the CW (of course, my TiVo is already set up to record!).

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price   August 30, 2008

I think Supernatural is a much better show than most people (other than fans) give it credit for. But I won't be buying the third season until the inevitable $19.99 sale in a few months. I am pissed that the season was substantially shorter than the first two but we're still being asked to pay the same amount. That just seems wrong. I can't give Supernatural one star no matter how mad I am that they didn't make the price comparable to the amount of episodes contained. So I'm giving it two. Please note that the rating is based on the price alone and not on the quality of the show, which really is good.
