Product Description Rarely does a mom or dad make it through a day without thinking they could use an extra set of hands. So we designed the next best thing---a safety gate that doesn't require any hands at all! But perhaps the finest part is that while it's simple for an adult to just press on the pedal and walk through, it's too difficult for a baby. Features include: foot-pedal operated gate swings open in both directions fits all standard doorways 29"" to 34"" wide, and will fit openings up to 44"" wide with Gate Extension Kit for use from 6 to 24 months pressure-mounted design that won't mar walls or doorway audible click indicates gate has locked
Amazon.com Product Description Because of its simple "knee-knocker" mechanism, this Hands Free Gate can do exactly what the name implies: be opened without having to use your hands. Any parent occupied with little ones and all of their necessities will quickly recognize this as a huge benefit. To operate, simply press on the pedal with your toes and then bump the knee plate with your knee. Closing is just a nudge in the opposite direction; you will hear a click when the latch has caught, offering peace of mind that it's secure again. | | The convenient foot pedal is easy for adults, but difficult for children, to open. | The pedal, knee plate, and hinges are designed so the gate can swing open from either direction. Even smarter is that the gate is purposely designed as easy-to-open for an adult, yet difficult for children. The gate's vertical bars curb curious toddlers from trying to climb over, are spaced to help prevent painful accidents, and provide ample visibility through to the other side. | | Adjustable pressure mounts don't require screws and won't mark up your walls. | Able to fit in standard doorframes (29" to 34" wide), the all-metal safety gate is a pressure-mount device. Just twist the adjustable bolts at each of the four corners to get a proper, secure fit in your doorways. (If you have wider than standard doors, The First Years sells extension kits separately that can accommodate up to 44-inch wide openings.) It should be noted that this safety gate can be a little unsteady when used at the outer limits of its range, so you may want to consider an extension kit even if using in a standard doorway. Before you buy, there are two things to be aware of. One, the actual opening for parents, kids, and/or pets to walk through is only about 18 inches wide. Two, if you want to use this in a doorway and be able to close the door, the foot pedal sticks out too far to allow this. For use with children up to 24 months.

so far so good October 6, 2008 Theresa L. Parker-brown So far so good my two year olds can't get it open. They love to slam it though, and we have had a bit of a problem with closing it since they have been so rough on it. Overall we love it. It is much easier to navigate then our last gate (especially since it goes into the kitchen and I usually have my hands full when I am trying to go through it). We have an old house that probably doesn't have an even doorway and this gate can be adjusted to accommodate that. I would recommend it to a friend.
A great baby gate October 4, 2008 English Teacher (Los Angeles, CA) I am very pleased with this product. Keeps my baby safe, lets me be at ease.
Best gate I've ever seen September 30, 2008 Barbara A. Carlson (Pittsburgh, PA, USA) This is, indeed, an excellent gate. It arrived in perfect condition, too, which is not always the case on shipped items. This gate is sturdy, easy to install, and performs well. I bought it for my pet ferrets. I modified it by adding wood paneling (since ferrets would have no problem slipping through the bars) and it has been performing well. I did notice that you really need to push it shut with the knee pad or the bottom doesn't latch as readily, but that's no big deal. It clicks loudly when latched, which is a good thing, since it helps you know you've got it shut right. So far no ferrets have escaped through it (since we added the wood). There IS a small hole under the foot pedal that a tiny ferret might try to use as an escape route, but so far, none of mine have done more than peek through the opening. This gate has definitely improved things, as stepping over the gate a zillion times a day was ruining my hip. This is a well-made gate!
The First Years Gate - Excellent Quality!! September 19, 2008 maria29526 (Myrtle Beach, SC) This gate was the one I selected based on reviews and I am glad I did. My 10month old cannot access the kitchen and my 5 year old nephew had a hard time accessing as well, which was the point :-) Excellent quality! Very happy with it and would recommend it.
misleading description September 5, 2008 William Roussie (western New York state) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although i must admit that this system could conceivably work just fine for a normal doorway, little information is given to "warn" the prospective buyer of the products limitations as to wider doorways. No provision is made for adjusting to a wider doorway and, although the company has "adjusters", they want an additional exorbitant amount for those "adjusters". The result was that i had to swallow a $22 shipping charge to return the item to Amazon. None the less, i do feel fortunate having purchased the item from Amazon which allowed me to return the item with no questions asked. I will be quite a bit more cautious the next purchase and, given the chance, will avoid any purchase from this company.
