Really neat machine ! July 6, 2008 I traded my old (big, heavy) Laptop for one of these beauties - the traveler's friend ! I opted for the XP-loaded version but forgot you do need an anti-virus/firewall program with Windows which takes up a lot of memory. I suspect the Linux version can get along fine without Norton so more memory is available. I replaced the 512 MB of RAM with a 2GB stick which really improved the operability and added a 4GB SD card for carrying photos, movies, music, whatever for entertainment. Wouldn't trade back to one of those Laptop monsters for anything ! jayb1943
Small but nice July 4, 2008 This computer is very nice and when it came in my wife took it. It is good for email when on the road.
What started has a geek toy is very practical..... July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I initially bought this mini-laptop as a geek toy for myself that I could use while geocaching. It very quickly turned practical on my trip to the Pacific Northwest. I was the driver for the entire trip and neither one of the kids is good at being a navigator. I put mapping software (DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2009) and a gps onto the laptop. I drove through four states with this little computer guiding the way. It saved a lot of frustration not to mention the car was not cluttered with paper.
The wireless works great. At one point, we were in Seattle and needed to make hotel reservations. I whipped out the laptop, quickly found a hot spot and was on my way to making reservations.
Even a month after the trip this little laptop has continued to be quite useful. I use it primarily for managing my geocaching ([...]), email and light web browsing. I love the fact that this laptop can fit in my purse, but its size makes it difficult to type and view web pages without scrolling left and right.
The speakers on the asus are pretty decent for its size, but then I'm not an audiophile. I enjoy listening to internet radio and music (try [...]). It sounds just fine to my ears.
The biggest con I can find with this unit is that I was expecting the battery life to be longer. With continous use my estimates came in at about 3 hours tops while using it as a gps navigator in the car.
This little computer is a great addition to a desktop computer or a larger laptop. It won't replace either of them. It has neither the horse power nor the size to make that happen.
I would recommend buying an SD card (I have an 8 GB), because from the get go there is only about 1.7 GB available for use. Even after getting rid of Microsoft Works, Microsoft Live and a couple other things there was only about 2GB.
Great laptop July 1, 2008 This laptop is perfect for me. It is small and lightweight, does everything I need it to. I had considered a nokia, but I needed an ethernet port for testing and such. The screen is actually very readable (this was my biggest fear)and the audio is loader than any other laptop I have come across. I had considered the Linux model, but I have too many USB apps for Windows that I use. This laptop is perfect for that as I use my USB stick for all applications and data, I rarely actually install anything in Windows. The keyboard needed a little getting used to, I tend to use the right shift key and it is small. I have no complaints and use it everyday for work and pleasure. I am very pleased with this laptop and highly recommend it.
very good, simple and efective July 1, 2008 a computer asus is a great idea, just left buy the new model that is more beautifil and powerful, the hard is very small ( 4 GB ridicuolus), please if you buy, buy with 20 GB hard drive. I dont know, my battery is so poor, 2 hours or minus, and I suggest put 01 USB more, and the properties of table pc, and bluetooh. But I recomend this product, but with 20 GB.
