Product Description The OQO Model 02 Ultra Mobile PC is a tiny, ultra-portable computer designed for the mobile professional. The computer features a 5" widescreen LCD and powerful wireless capabilities. The Model 02 can rest in the palm of your hand so the screen slides up to reveal a comfortable QWERTY keyboard with an integrated track stick-pointing device. The Q1 features 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi to connect to standard wireless networks and hotspots. In places where Wi-Fi connection is unavailable, you can enjoy mobile internet access that doesn't require a wireless hotspot for connectivity with the embedded Verizon Mobile Broadband Module. Bluetooth support is also integrated into the device, allowing you to interface with your wireless devices. OQO is now offering a 1.8-inch 32GB solid state drive (SSD) that is based on NAND flash memory with no moving parts. In addition, model 02 computers with solid state drives exhibit better performance and faster boot times. Perfect daytrader system when equipped with the CDMA modem and max RAM and XP / screw Vista and Tablet PC September 10, 2008 Anonymous (United States) Our financial services firm ( I'm witholding the name since it isn't necessary and shouldn't be considered in any way biased) deploys this system to our traders who use them while on vacation or planned leaves. The combination of the CDMA card and 60GB HDD is more than adequate for our out of office traders to monitor and execute their positions. It can handle streaming video from Bloomberg, CNBC and SlingBoxes while streaming eSignal, Quotrek and Reuters 3000 Xtra. FX currency trading and listed options chains quotes along with streaming video is very demanding of bandwidth and CPU and our OQO '02's handle them all. The screen width is obviously small but the clarity and backlight makes it readable, there is a simple FN+/- combination so you can quickly enlarge and decrease the screen resolution without having to use XP screen properties menus to change the screen size. Skip the Tablet XP option, XP handwriting recognition just sucks beyond description since Microsoft removed Grafitti support in XP Tablet SP2. Mucking Ficro$0ft. You may have to tune or even disable anti-virus scanning since monitoring file system and RAM access while executing the aforementioned applications can overload the 02 and drag it into the unsatisfactory column. If you're an independent trader, this device can pay for itself quickly on those occasions you have to watch your positions but can't use a traditional laptop. Hint: If you have to attend your mother in law's funeral and it happens to be on the same day the FOMC announces their decision, you can toggle the fan speed so you can stream data and the rate decision while in the back row during the eulogy.
Do Not Buy This Device June 24, 2008 Richard E. Tullie (Palm Beach County, FL) I am an owner of a Model 02 OQO. It has a major Motherboard Flaw that causes the device to "lock up" and not work. The OQO Tech said this "has happened before." I was forced to ship it back to OQO and, worst of all, THEY SAY IT COULD TAKE OVER 2 MONTHS TO FIX. This is unacceptable. Buy another device. This one is flawed.
Misses the Mark May 31, 2008 Red Bear (Allentown, PA United States) The OQO Model 2 should be a pass unless you have got a strong supporting reason for using one. It misses the mark in several areas that make other ultraportables much more attractive. 1. The Keyboard. The first thing you will notice is that using this thing is difficult. Unlike my phone keyboard, which is smaller but easier to use, the OQO keyboard is just plain painful to use. In addition, not all the keys are present that should be, most notably the WINDOWS key. You can plug in a USB keyboard, but that sort of defeats the purpose. 2. The radios. Both the WiFi and the 3G radios are weak. Getting a signal on this thing for either network reduces your range by half. In places where I should be seeing mid level power I get nothing. Both networks were verified using other portable devices and worked fine where the OQO refused to pick up a signal. This alone makes it a pass in my book. I looked for ways to increase the power and did not find any. It is possible to use the OQO2, but it's too painful if you can avoid it. I'd much rather use my phone or another ultraportable or even a plain old featherweight laptop. Get something else if you can.
