Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Small enough to keep with you at all times and ideal for achieving peace and quiet in planes, trains, buses, and cars, Sony's MDR-NC6 noise-canceling over-ear headphones reduce perceived outside noise by more than 70 percent (up to 10 dB at 300 Hz) so you can hear musical nuances against a quieter background.

The headphones' noise-canceling circuit senses outside noise using tiny, built-in microphones and sends an equal-but-opposite canceling signal to the headphone drivers, effectively blocking solid-state (continuous) noise from 40 to 1,500 Hz. It's especially effective on noises like air-conditioning systems, freeway rumble, and airplane engines (from a passenger's perspective).

The switchable noise-canceling circuitry runs for approximately 30 hours on a single AAA alkaline battery. When noise canceling is off, the headphones continue to function for standard music listening (and with slightly better sound quality). The headphones' neodymium-magnet diaphragms deliver powerful sound.

The headphones and their swiveling earcups fold for easy storage, and a special supplied adapter facilitates use of the headphones with an airplane's audio system.

What's in the Box
Headphones, a carry pouch, an in-flight adapter, and a user's manual.

Product Description
Shut off the outside world with MDR-NC6 noise canceling headphones.Ambient sound can be reduced over 10dB at 300Hz, which means you'll hear more music, and less plane/train/bus noise. Noise canceling headphones are great for work, traveling, or even when you're trying to sleep in a loud place. The MDR-NC6 has a slim swivel folding design, making them more compact for storage. Includes plug adaptor to connect directly to a stereo or dual jack of in-flight music services.

5 out of 5 stars Great headphones for the price   October 1, 2008
Scott B. Phelps (Savannah, NY USA)
The Sony MDR-NC6 noise canceling headphones are great for the price. I use them in a noisy work environment
and they cut down a lot of the outside noise around me. I can then listen to my music at a much lower volume. When I have used other headphones I have to turn the volume way up just to hear my music over the machine noise. After a short period of time, my ears would begin to hurt. With the volume lower on the Sony headphones, I can listen at a comfortable level and still get a great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound. Great price. Buy them, now.   September 20, 2008

3 out of 5 stars Good sound, fair noise cancellation cause ear discomfort with time   September 8, 2008
Robert (phx, AZ)
Since I bought them at a good price and they function well overall I guess one can't complain too much, but they do hurt your ears with time. Perhaps streching them out a bit would help, or buying a thicker padding for the earpieces. Obviously Sony has moved on from these but thought I'd post the review anyways...

4 out of 5 stars Just ok   August 23, 2008

I don't particularly like the fit. It's a little straight over the top of the head and is a little iritating. When you turn on the noise reduction feature it enhances the sound which is really nice however, the noise reduction must work on a microphone feedback to some extent because when the wind blows it's noisy in the head set. It does not reduce the surrounding noise of mowers and such to any extent to where its useable. I do like the sound though and if you're just working around the yard or in a room it's fine.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY   August 15, 2008
L. Gavin (Gillette, NJ)
i bought these headphones about a year ago, and was hoping for something for an airplane ride. the first thing i noticed was that they hurt your ears if you wear them for about 2 hours. now, coming back from paris, the right noise canceling went out! it was so annoying. also, they do not get loud enough if noise canceling was not on.
