5 out of 5 stars Laser saw guide   March 15, 2008

The guide casts a thin red line in the path the saw blade will take. This makes it simple to cut any board to length. You can measure the length anywhere on the board anf the laser line shows where the blade wil go. I like it very much.

1 out of 5 stars absolutley unusable   November 23, 2007

I would have given this no stars if possible. The reason is that it is entirely worthless as an accessory that was produced for accuracy. I bought an Infiniter, and at ten dollars less it is extremely accurate. I received a response from Irwin regarding the inaccuracy of their laser light...they wrote..."The laser guide is installed next to the blade so the cut will not be directly where the laser is on the wood, but will be about 1/16" off to the side." ...I responded that this very important information should be printed on the package.
Why own something that uses a laser, if it's going to be approximately a 1/16" off where your going to make the cut. I've seen cheap lasers that guarantee an accuracy of +/- 1/8" within 50 feet, I find this acceptable. A laser that's purpose is to project a cut line only inches away, and have it off by a sixteenth of an inch, this is entirely unacceptable. Unless your using it for 2x4 framing (which some do), don't bother. The instructions state to "align your laser mark and the cut line". It doesn't say "align your laser mark with the cut line that should be about a 1/16" to the right of the laser. One good thing though, you'll never cut a board too short!! I returned it and took another thinking I simply received a bad one, but it wasn't the case. The second laser was equally off by a 1/16". With todays technology, this is inexcusable for any Manufacturer. I'm very surprised being an Irwin product.

5 out of 5 stars Works great on radial arm saws   September 24, 2007

This laser works great on my 5/8" arbor radial arm saw. Also has a pop out adaptor to fit 1" arbor saws. Makes squaring up the saw a breeze.

I purchased one of these in a kit with a saw blade for my dewalt 12 compount miter saw. I love the laser, it makes it so much easier to line up the blade with pencil marks, but installation wasn't so easy.

The laser mounts on the saw shaft, replacing the washer to clamp the blade to the saw. I tried to mount it with the irwin saw blade and discovered the saw blade wasn't as thick as the lenght of saw shaft arbor, so the blade spun independently of the shaft when the laser was mounted to the saw. I switched to a wider kerf blade that was thicker and resolved this problem. With the new blade and laser mounted, I discovered an interference with the laser and the saw blade guard. The laser was too thick, and reached the blade guard. I had to remove the blade guard and grind away part of a washer and spring to provide enough clearance for the laser to fit and rotate. This resolved the interference problem.

The laser now works when the blade is rotating, shining a red line right next to the blade cut. I quickly learned how far off to adjust the pencil mark from the laser for perfect cuts. Has worked great for 6 months now.

Highly recommend for serious woodworker.
