Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Neverwinter Nights 2 (NWN2) is a computer role-playing game set in the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms, one of the popular campaign settings of Dungeons and Dragons. It takes the player from the tiniest of villages into a sweeping tale of danger and war, chronicling their rise from a peasant to a full-fledged hero of the Realms, defending it against one of the greatest threats of the age. Build a character that suits your style of play - good or evil, chaotic or lawful, with any number of skills, feats and professions available at the click of a button. Whether lobbing fireballs and researching forgotten spells as a powerful Wizard, hacking a trail through legions of orcs as a Fighter armed only with a battle axe and your courage, or taking on the role of a Rogue that can slip into the shadows at a moment's notice, the choice is yours. Choose your alignment, your allies, your companions, and how you want your character to develop... design the character you want, role-play the way you want, and carry the battle to the enemy.
The design aspects of Neverwinter Nights 2 don't stop there, however. Past the campaign included with the game itself, Neverwinter Nights 2 also gives you all the tools you need to build your own modules, campaigns, and adventures for your friends - move buildings, terrain, script encounters, write dialogues, create quests and items - everything you need to create an epic adventure of your own is included in the toolset for you and any other worldbuilder to use. So if you are interested in adventure - or building adventures of your own - look no further. Neverwinter Nights 2 is on the horizon, and adventure awaits.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.   June 14, 2008

I bought this along with my first iMac, and I truly regret doing so. The graphics are bland, you'll spend a quarter of your time fighting with the camera, and the first part of the story is gut-wrenchingly stereotypical:

1. You play the orphan step-son/daughter of a reasonably important NPC living in a sleepy little village.
2. Your village is attacked by an evil wizard and his forces looking for some powerful item.
3. You become embroiled in events of world-shattering importance (or so I assume).

I finally gave up after one of your NPC companions is killed and you can't resurrect her, even though there's a freakin' cleric just on the other side of town. My stuck-up LG fighter companion and the mage to whom the dead character was apprenticed were both like "Forget about her! Go save the village!" and here I the player am thinking, "Screw the village! I'm Chaotic Neutral - helping my friend rather than the village is completely in character!"

3 out of 5 stars Bob F.   June 2, 2008
NeverWinter Nights 2 (Macintosh) ought to be a great game. It has all the elements--great graphics, an interesting story line, characters that actually change their alignments and personalities as the game progresses, fun challenges to overcome, etc. When it works, I love playing NWN2; unfortunately, it has so many computer glitches that--at times--I want to throw the darned disc away! For example, it has a MAJOR glitch concerning non-player characters (NPCs) that unexpectedly disappear from the game. Their player slot is replaced by an icon that looks like a shadow person walking into a cobwebbed cavern (I suppose "never to be heard from again"?). Once the icon appears in the character's slot you cannot access that character from that point forward.

This makes for a frustrating game because NPCs are essential to the unfolding of the story. The game is set up for you to complete "quests;" but if a character is missing that is integral to the completion of the quest, you are figuratively up the creek without a paddle! The only way around this dilemma is to go back to the last saved point in the game where the character exists and begin again from there. However, you must learn WHAT you did to create the glitch! Rather than spending hours blindly trying to figure out how to overcome the computer glitch, I suggest that you should sign on to the NWN2 quorum on the internet. There you can find all of the answers to the "known" problems.

Well, that's about it. In summary, it's a great game when it works but beware the unforeseen obstacles!

2 out of 5 stars Terribly Outdated Engine and Impossible Controls Ruin the Game   May 31, 2008

If you're a Mac user looking for a good D&D style game there's not a lot of choices. Don't let that get you to buy this game... it's still not worth it. Sign up for Warcraft instead, after playing Warcraft on the Mac or Oblivion on PS3 you won't be able to stand the outdated graphics engine and user interface, and the buggy camera control for even a short period. This game does give you more turn by turn control than Warcraft does if you enjoy spending 5 minutes controlling 5 seconds of game time play. But if you want to pick up a game and immerse yourself in on D&D style world this IS NOT the game for it, the clunky UI and controls will be constant reminders of the real world and endlessly frustrating. Buy a used copy of Oblivion if you own a PS3, or pay more for a far better game on the Mac and go with Warcraft.

3 out of 5 stars Some odd bugs in an otherwise great game   April 27, 2008
The game play and graphics are terrific. Camera control is clunky and frustrating at times. There are some odd bugs--one character has disappeared. The travel screen, not the game's best feature anyway, reached a point where it would not let me travel to the right locations to complete quests. As a result, I've had to abandon a level 12 or so character to start over again. Documentation is thin and there don't seem to be walkthroughs available--at least I can't find them. Cut sequences are longer than they need to be and way too frequent. Wish it were possible to import characters from NWN to use in the game. The shifts in alignment good/evil, lawful/chaotic don't make much sense.

New spells are fun as are new weapons. Play is challenging. Graphics are well done. Soundtrack is interesting.
