Editorial Review Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderful activity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. (Note: The manufacturer recommends that butterflies should not be set free in temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.) --Rachel Radway

disappointing-had to purchase caterpillars for the initial project. July 3, 2008 Very disappointing. When my granddaughter received this gift, she found that there were no caterpilars to watch, and infact had to wait to purchase the crystallis before she could do anything! Very disappointing!
Excellent experience July 3, 2008 This was great fun for the kids. It was quite simple to do and even the contractor working in our house followed the growth of the butterflies!
Really Interesting July 1, 2008 I thought that this product was a great idea. There are a couple of issues that I had with this item. To order the catapillars cost an extra fee, that while it was minimal, it was unlisted in the product description. The other thing is that the kids, (ages 9 & 5) were disappointed that they couldn't touch the caterpillars. All in all this was a educational product that can be used again, and would be great for a science fair project.
live butterflys June 29, 2008 My almost three year old son loves bugs. So we thought this would be a great toy for him. I think I like it more than him, he is more hands on, and of course you cant really touch the catapillars, you just have to look at them. But they are just now beginning to turn into cocoons. I will for sure be ordering more catapillars and doing this again!!
loved it June 26, 2008 This was a great experience! It was amazing for both the kids and parents to watch!
