Lots of track; not a lot of filler. September 2, 2008 J. Leonard (Midwest) I'd have to say one of the best truths is that it really does come with practically 135 pieces of useful track and not a lot of filler such as trees and signs. I was also given a cheaper brand of track from a hand-me-down and it doesn't even compare. We bought this train set for our 3 year old's b.day and it was (and continues to be) a hit. I'm not sure who has more fun me (mommy) or my son. I'm quite sure that my 3 yr old and his little brother will be having fun with this for years to come. Highly recommend! I would also like to say, to those of you who are on the fence about whether to buy the more popular name brand tracks, save your money; use the savings to buy the name brand train that will be compatible with your M&Doug set.
Great train set for a kid interested in trains August 30, 2008 J. Watson (Currently in OK) We bought this train set at first because we didn't want Thomas the Train, but we wanted something durable. We have a few Melissa & Doug toys, and they are really well-built. Our son LOVES this set. It comes with a few different train configurations to get started, but even at two years old, he is starting to develop his own configuration. We build our tracks on our really old, low quality carpet, so we don't have to worry as much about the train tracks coming apart, but you can invest in some SureTrack if that might be a problem. One thing that is hard for us is that the elevated portion of the track falls easily (because of the lack of stability on our carpet and the lack of self awareness of a two-year-old). We haven't used the bridges that often unless they are shored up against some furniture. All in all, the train set is exactly what we wanted, mostly track, some trains, and very few filler pieces (trees, signs, people, etc.)
Great option if u dont want to spend the $$ on Thomas June 17, 2008 Constant Shopper (Charlotte, NC United States) I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to get a wooden train set. There is absolutely no reason to spend the $$ on a Thomas wooden train set. You can interchange w/ any of the other wooden tracks and my son uses the wooden thomas the trains on this one. Recommend the Maxim mountain accessory.
A toy to grow with April 1, 2008 j's ol lady (VA Bch, VA) I purchaed this set for my 2 1/2 year old daughter after my niece (4) and Nephew (2) got one. After all the research my sister did, she found it was the best buy for the money. It may lack some of finer details of a much more expensive, more popular wooden train set/character brand out there, but the rails are completely compatible, just as sturdy and the kids don't mind one bit. And a side note to other parents, to avoid the mess of all the pieces, glue them down to the train table. Also, that way if you buy it for a younger child, they don't get frusterated with it getting knocked down and you're not constantly having to put back together for them.
My son loves it, but consider age when purchasing March 28, 2008 Carol O. Lindquist I purchased this set after reviewing quite a few different ones. It does come with an ample amount of track, not filled up with trees & stop signs (stuff you don't care about). With reading the reviews, I also purchased the suretrack clips to hold the track pieces together on the elevated areas, since several reviewers mentioned the toddler meltdowns that ensued when the pieces came apart. I purchased 2 sets of the suretrack and we had 2 clips left over after setup. I found that even if you do not have a toddler, the clips are a must. My husband was initially trying to put the set together without using the clips & once you moved something that was already in place (an elevated piece), it would fall down. So I think that the clips are really neccessary for any age. The only bad thing about the suretrack is that on corners, the trains tend to hit the clips & sometimes derail, causing a meltdown! This set is also nice because it does comes with a few different layout ideas. The wood is good quality, although some of the angled pieces do not sit 100% on the track. There is a tiny bit of warp to them. But not every piece, just a couple. The only complaint I have about the trains is that one of the trains is a truck & it is alittle long and doesn't handle the tight turns very well. It derails almost everytime. Of course, that is the one my son likes best, so I had to hide it because he wants to use that one, and cannot understand why it keeps derailing. Overall, I think that it is a good train set for the money.
