Vtech Food Fun June 28, 2008 I debated on whether to buy this or the leap frog word whammer or the leap frog fridge phonics. But, they had a ton of bad reviews about the letters not working properly. So, I went with this one.
All I wanted was something where they put a letter into the machine and it told them what the letter was. This product doesn't do that. It tells them what letters to put in the machine (I'd rather my kids choose which ones to put in).
Also, my 4 and 5 yr olds keep using it as a food identifier and not a letter one. Instead of finding the "L" he says the "lemon".
The 3 buttons keep getting bumped into and so it changes the question / answer. Also, sometimes the fridge part slides down on the fridge and the foods/letters fall off the fridge a lot. I finally gave them a cookie sheet to play with it on. They play with it while I am busy in the kitchen. They really love it.
It's not a bad product. It's just not exactly what I was looking for.
Great ABC's June 18, 2008 My daughter is 2 and showed interest in letters. So I decided to get something that she can do on her own when I'm busy. These letters are great. After 3 months she is repeating "Eating an apple a day keeps the doctor away..." /from the letter A/. The only thing is that now she plays with the toy for a short time and than looses interest. But eventually she comes back to it. I think that could apply to any toy and any 2 year old...
Fun for younger toddlers too April 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This might be more suitable for an older child (it does recommend 3+), but I bought it for my 1-yr old since he was taking a keen interest in food at the time. It did capture his imagination for a while, and he found it fun to take foods, orient them correctly, and have it fit into the "fridge". It's also got a good learning utility in that I could line up 4-5 different foods and have have him pick out the correct one when asked.
That said, I am not a fan of toys for toddlers that come with a million different components, as it is only a matter of (little!) time before the parts get strewn all over the house. So now I end up finding these tiny food magnets in the laundry, on the staircase, in the bath-tub....you get the picture.
Not great durability April 13, 2008 The product does NOT stay on the frig. It slides down. Also the door is so hard to open my child has to ask me to open it and I can barely get it. The learning aspect is great but these other flaws are disturbing.
Great fun on the "real" fridge in the kitchen! April 9, 2008 My 1-year-old loves this toy so much I had to hide it at times. Of course, it would give way because the automatic shut-off didn't shut off fast enough. It's true that it can be annoying but overall, I like this toy.
My daughter's speech is early. So, she's really interested in the names of the food and other facts about them. So, I now use the magnets only without the little fridge that comes with it. I put all the magnets in an empty container and leave it by the (real) fridge in the kitchen. She likes to stick them to the fridge while I cook and I can teach her the names and other things about each piece of magnet while doing my chores. It also serves like a little menu before her mealtimes as she sometimes picks up a peice of magnet and tells me she wants to eat that particular food. (Example: Grapes! I wouldn't understand what she meant if she didn't show me the magnet becasue a 1-year-old speech is still limited however early.) When she knows all the names and letters, I might reintroduce her the little toy fridge that one reviewer called "the energizer bunny".
Most pieces are great... with an exception on the letters Q and X. These two pieces have no food on them but the letters themselves. The letter U introduces the term "utensils" to the little ones. The Apple and Tomato also look alike and it's a bit confusing to a 1-year-old, but a 3-year-old can probably tell the difference.
I have to say I like it a lot becasue these magnets keep my toddler busy for a good 30-45 minutes at a time! And without the noise!!!
