Amazon.com Product Description
The First Alert Ultimate Series smoke alarms incorporate all of the patented features that make First Alert the leader in home safety products. The SA302C comes with both photoelectric and ionization sensors to detect flame or smoke in one powerful alarm. The rear mounted sensor is the most efficient design in the industry. With intelligent sensing technology, this alarm is designed to recognize the difference between non-threatening conditions and real emergencies. It is effective at detecting both slow, smoldering fires and fast, flaming fires. A loud 85-decibel alarm alerts you to smoke or fire.p The alarm's microprocessor technology automatically runs daily self-check tests on every smoke alarm function (does not test horn) to assure you that it's working properly. Silencing and testing functions can be run by most household remote controls such as the ones used for the television, stereo, and VHS or DVD players, eliminating the need to reach the ceiling. It features a low battery alert to remind you when to change the battery and has a missing battery guard to ensure that a battery is placed inside the alarm. The alarm automatically quiets the low battery alert without affecting the alarm's functionality. The side battery drawer slides open for easy battery replacement. p This unit comes with a 9-volt battery and a 10-year limited warranty. UL listed for safety. Approved for sale in Oregon.I--Bree Norlander/IpbWhat's in the Box/b brOne smoke alarm, user's manual, and one 9-volt batteryp

5 out of 5 stars Quick, Easy, Effective   November 16, 2008

Standard ion-based fire alarms have a success rating of a big 35%. I didn't know this until a fire expert talked to me about fire safety in our home. That was when I found out that in Europe and Canada, ion-based smoke detectors are outlawed and photo-sensors are the norm. These have a much higher rate of success and reliability. br / br /This model is affordable and has a lot of great features. Be aware, however, that if you install yours anywhere near a heat source that could make steam, cooking smoke, etc., the alarm will go off. This is where the mute feature comes in so handy--especially the TV remote ability. br / br /When you install one in the kitchen, just be sure it's on the opposite side of the room from your stovetop and you'll have very few false alarms. I learned this the hard way, but I also learned that smoke I can't see will set off this alarm--as well white smoke and even heat radiance and steam (none of which will trigger your ion-based alarm). br /

My house is still standing. But seriously, this seems like a great product. I bought it because of really good reviews elsewhere and here.

1 out of 5 stars Useless junk   October 13, 2008

It gets a star because I had too. I bought one of these and tried three different new batteries including the one that came with it and could only get a fleeting chirp from one of the batteries. The test button never would indicate to me the unit was working. If you simply must buy one; check out the unit with a battery before going to the trouble of installing the mounting ring. Now I'm stuck with this piece of junk because it would cost more to send it back than the unit cost.

I purchased one of the 'smoke' alarms for the remote control feature. Like all 'smoke' alarms I have owned this is to sensitive. It triggers when making toast, baking a cake. There is never any smoke when it goes off. The remote feature doesn't seem to work with any of my remotes. So tonight when it went off I pulled it off the ceiling and smashed it on the floor. That made it stop. I would rather run the risk of a fire in my kitchen than have to deal with another so called 'smoke' alarm. Maybe some day there will be a real smoke alarm on the market. As for as this goes I plan to package it tomorrow and mail to company with a letter of satisfaction.
