Though this Porter-Cable tool is priced higher than comparable DeWalt and Makita models, the 557 is Amazon.com's top-selling plate joiner. Its success is perhaps due to its very powerful 7-1/2 amp motor--the largest in the industry--which turns the blade at 10,000 rpm and does an excellent job of making clean cuts in any kind of wood. As well as cutting slots for the standard no. 0, 10, and 20 biscuits, Porter-Cable's joiner features an exclusive, full-thickness, FF biscuit developed especially for cabinet face frames. Another unique feature of the Porter-Cable joiner is the 2-inch blade (included), which is small enough to make cuts in stock as narrow as 1-1/2 inches. I had one of these. It is good enough for case work like kitchen cabinets but not accurate enough for joining stiles and rails or furniture work. The blade alignment of mine was tilted about 1/64" from one side to the other.

This is very well made. I like the adjustment features. When doing horizontal cuts, I installed the guide because the torque will cause the joiner to jump offline. I am very happy with this product!

The second day I owned the Porter-Cable Plate Joiner, the blade change screw became stuck. I tried WD40 and an extension on the Allen wrench that came with the joiner. The Allen wrence broke. I took the joiner to the local warranty repair facility. They were also unable to remove the blade. In fact, they damaged the retaining screw and the blade while trying to fix it. I had to leave the joiner with them for a week for repair. So I did not have use of the tool during the first week I owned it. On the good side, the repair was free and joiner does a good job.

Just started using the Porter - Cable 557 plate joiner, it appears to be a quality product and is user friendly. br /The initial cuts were easy to make and actuate.

Absolutely the best on the market. My hired hands have tried to tear up the Joiner without success. The other brands that I tried were easy for my employees to break for burn up. Porter Cable has my confidence on their tools. br /
