Never would have made it on Vacation! November 17, 2008 D. S. Wargo (Brooklyn ,NY) The 604 Ascent 1600 box was a breeze to install and easy to use. The inner straps are critical to compact soft bags to allow the locking merchanism to engage. Thule should add a small folding step stool to allow ease loading on SUV's! I needed a three step ladder to load in efficiently. The dual-side access feature is perfect.
Road Trip November 16, 2008 J. LaDuke (Las Vegas) Our Thule Ascent 1600 was compatible with our 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with the one catch that it pushes the little antenna over near the back. With the box pushed as forward as we could get it there was about an inch of space from the back to the open hatch. br / br /The real problem is that Hyundai made this model with the front roof rack crossbar only able to move halfway to the front of the vehicle. br / br /Even with this hiccup, we were able to attach the box with no headaches in about 10 minutes from opening the box which was awesome. It holds plenty of stuff, but don't cram it too full if you want to open and close it a lot. br / br /So far we've gone about 400 miles on our 2600 mile trip and in rather high winds, it's done well. It does catch the crosswinds noticably more, but that was expected. At around 55-60mph you start to hear a wind rush, but it's not noticeable if you have the radio going or some other noise. br / br /The key being held in the lock while it's unlocked and open is a great feature for forgetful people like us, and the open-from-either-side is an AWESOME feature. br / br /I'm really happy with the box, and with super-saver shipping, you can't beat it in any of the over-priced camping/hiking stores.
lots of storage and just the right size for our car September 15, 2008 M. S. Ribarich (Orlando FL) The first thing I'd suggest is measuring your car. Make sure you open up your back gate and measure what sort of room you have. You should be able to open up the gate fully and not hinder opening the cargo box at the same time. The 1600 fit our Chrysler Pacifica perfectly. The larger, and more expensive, 1700 only provided 1 more cubic foot but was longer than my car could take. So for the price, free shipping (saving about $60), no sales tax etc, this was the best purchase. We were thinking of buying a new minivan to accommodate our growing family but now we can put the luggage up top and everyone inside.
Thule 604 Ascent Top Carrier September 2, 2008 T. Temple (Northern IL United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just used this carrier on a 1600-mile round trip from northern Illinois to North Carolina (on a 2005 Astro Van). On the return trip (September 14), we went through extreme hurricane force winds (aftermath from Hurricane Ike) of 75 MPH from all directions in Louisville, KY. The wind downed trees on the interstate, but the carrier held firmly and no rain entered despite an incredible amount of buffeting due to the winds. I was concerned that the sideways and up-and-down effects of severe buffeting might loosen the grips on the crossbar, but the grips were as tight when I arrived home as they were when I left home. I saw two top carriers that had separated from their vehicles and had been run over on I-65...that's how bad the wind was. br / br /When I first got it it fit up well, but one of the saddles that sits on the cross rail broke. I called Thule customer service and they were very nice. They immediately sent four new saddles and said that I must have received one of their earlier units that had substandard saddles. They apparently discovered this recently and were very accommodating. I appreciate their fine customer service, although I am glad I had time to get the saddles before my trip. Suggest that you make certain that you have the most recent saddles. br / br /Shipping service and tracking through Amazon was great, and the price was the best I could find!Thule 604 Ascent 1600 Rooftop Cargo Box (Black)
Lots of room and easy mounting! September 2, 2008 Coffee Lover (San Francisco, CA) Great product! Only took minutes to attach to my factory crossbars on my 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. Didn't really even notice a difference in gas mileage on a long camping trip. Lots of room to load all kinds of camping equipment. Easy access from both sides and handle straps were extremely helpful for closing the cargo top since my vehicle is high. Amazon shipped really quickly and even kept the box to store the cargo carrier in when not in use.
