Amazon.com Review Hans Holzer is a world-renowned parapsychologist and author of several paranormal books including IAre You Psychic?/I and IGhosts, Hauntings Possessions/I, in which we learn of Holzer's earlier forays into the world of the supernatural. His encounters with the undead are apparently never-ending. IGhosts: True Encounters with the World Beyond/I is a gigantic volume, documenting almost 200 cases of haunted houses, ships, castles, and just about any place imaginable! The cases are far more complex than just your average white-sheeted ghoul in the attic. Holzer examines the differences between "real ghosts," who reveal themselves to living people, and psychic impressions, which occur to many witnesses, always at the same time and place. There is also solid advice for interpreting paranormal signals--and even photographs of ghostly apparitions. This is an informative read, but one that is open to personal interpretation. I--Naomi Gesinger/I

Classic ghost stories for all readers October 10, 2008 Fiona Broome (NH) This book is one of the largest compilations of ghost stories ever published. In most cases, paranormal investigator Hans Holzer describes the legends and then tells us about his investigations at the site. Usually, he did very light historical research. In addition, he relied on psychic mediums to provide supporting or conflicting evidence for the legends. br / br /The results were always interesting, and this book has compiled many of the best of Holzer's stories from an era before ghost hunting became trendy and the subject of reality TV shows. br / br /Ghosts: True Encounters... is a well-designed and impressive book. It includes a variety of stories and legends, and many of them are nicely illustrated. br / br /In addition, this book will keep most readers busy for several months. It's a massive volume of tales. br / br /If you enjoy watching ghost shows on TV and you like ghost stories, this is a very good book. br / br /For ghost researchers, this book provides many interesting details and insights that could lead to productive investigations. However, I recommend some historical fact-checking before traveling a distance expecting to find a genuine haunting. br / br /Some of these stories are primarily entertainment, but -- if you enjoy a good, chilling ghost story -- these tales are very entertaining. br / br /(Generally, these stories are fine for both teens and adults.)
Classic Holzer! August 7, 2008 Jeffrey Peter A. Hauck (Pennsylvania USA) This book is classic Hans Holzer. It is a compilation of spooky and spectral stories and lore told to Holzer and re-told by him. Holzer bolsters his subject's stories by sometimes using psychics and sometimes conducting historical research to confirm facts. The majority of the stories in this book were told to Holzer in the 1960's and 1970's during the peak of his investigative prowess. br / br /Although his techniques pale by today's modern "ghost hunting" standards, Hans Holzer will always be one of the great pioneers in paranormal research. br / br /The stories are sometimes a little dry, sometimes a little boring, and sometimes nonplussing but their essence is superb Holzer at his best! br / br /Five stars without reservation. br / br /JP

Not very good January 13, 2008 Juan Manuel Cardona (Japan) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
More than a good ghost story book, which is what I was looking for, I got a shameless self-promoting pamphlet for a self-proclaimed ghost and haunting expert. I don't buy into the "medium walks in house-gets possessed-screams,kicks, growls-says a little girl died here, its there at the corner staring and waving at us"-etc. Blah-blah-blah as far as I'm concerned. Dissapointing. Implausible. And yes, I believe in the possibility of ghosts, but this has the stench of made up stuff all over it. Better material out there.
Absolutely love it! May 17, 2007 Sassypoch (Federal Way, WA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love reading about ghosts and hauntings. Some books just tell a story and that's it. You're not sure whether to believe it or not. This author has definitely done research and you can tell that he knows what he's talking about when you read it. He explains different types of hauntings and ghosts. It's a book that could take a lifetime to read. It's huge! They don't just list a bunch of stories. You feel like you're learning as you read. I would highly recommend this book to any ghost hunters or people just wanting to read about the paranormal.
