This book changes George Washington's words to suit its purpose September 5, 2008 S. Krieger (USA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I came across this book since I was trying to track down the source of a misquote of George Washington in Gov. Palin's 2007 Christian Heritage Week Proclamation. The proclamation states br / br /WHEREAS, George Washington enunciated, "animated alone by the pure spirit of Christianity, and conducting ourselves as the faithful subjects of our free government, we may enjoy every temporal and spiritual felicity." br / br /Googling, I found the exact words of this Proclamation in Federer's book, the first time these words seem to be used. Why is this? Because what George Washington actually wrote is different. What George Washington actually wrote was, writing to the first American Roman Catholic Bishop John Carroll, -- note the deletion and alteration of words by Federer -- "may the members of your society [sic] in America, animated alone by the pure spirit of Christianity, and still [sic!] conducting themselves [sic!] as the faithful subjects of our free government, enjoy every temporal and spiritual felicity." br / br /So this book contains at least one lie about George Washington's words that made it into a Christian Heritage Proclamation signed by Sarah Palin. I'd suggest being careful taking Federer's quotes at face value, since he is able to take them out of context and, more blatantly, alter the words he does quote to suit his purpose.
A must have for all American citizens January 18, 2008 Donny W. Zehrung (Milwaukee, WI USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Once you get this, just try and put it down! When I first got it... It took me almost 2 hours before I put it down. If only our country would turn back to the basic biblical roots of what our forefathers believed and lived out their lives with, I believe God would bless this Nation all the more. It says on page 530 of this book: Aug. 23rd. 1984, Pres. Ronald Reagan said, "If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a Nation gone under."
Excellent book! December 25, 2007 S. Cromer (Belton, SC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not only a great book of quotations, but it is a fantastic history book. Full of fun facts and very interesting
Renan a Christian? October 21, 2007 Justin D. Popham (Stillwater, OK USA) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Federer quotes a line or two of Ernest Renan in this book and mentions Renan's most famous work - "The Life of Jesus". I beg anyone who read and enjoyed "America's God and Country" to read Renan's The Life of Jesus (Great Minds Series), or at least its preface. br / br /In it (the preface to the 13th edition), Renan writes "that the miracles related by the Gospels had no reality; that the Gospels are not books written by help of the Divinity. Those two negations do not with us result from our method of criticism; they are anterior to it. They are the outcome of an experience which has never been belied. Miracles are things which never happen. Only credulous people think they see them: you cannot cite a single one which had taken place in the presence of witnesses competent enough to give a clear account of it. No special intervention of the Divinity, whether in the composition of a book, or in any event whatever, has been proved...It is because they tell of miracles that I say 'The Gospels are legends; they may contain history, but certainly all they set forth is not historical.'" br / br /How well do the lines quoted by Federer describe the religious beliefs of Renan? If Federer is willing to manipulate the writings of one of Western Civilizations most celebrated atheists, how can any of his works be trusted? How could I possibly rate this book anything other than 1 star? Federer believes he can get away with such transparent misrepresentations because he believes many of his readers will not be well read enough to question him. br / br /To form an enlightened opinion, one must read the works of the individuals in Federer's book for oneself; do not just take his word for it, or accept the few lines (or even pages) that he can pick out from volumes of work. Renan is the most flagrantly misrepresented, but by no means the only one. br / br / br / br /
America's God and Country August 3, 2007 Guy Gold (Florida) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book should be a part of every Pastor and Teacher's reference , also every home schooled child should have it. These are direct quotes re:God and Country, from all of our past leadership in the USA , no commentaries. We will not find these in our school books. Another good feature is, the whole book is in Alphabetic order by names. This is a great book.
