Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
DIVBBestselling expert James Geary#8217;s enlightening, entertaining compendium of wit and wisdom, from Sun Tzu to Desmond Tutu#8212;and 350 aphorists in between./BBR BRBoth an expert and a collector, James Geary has devoted his life to aphorisms#8212;and the last few years to organizing, indexing, and even translating them. The result is IGeary#8217;s Guide/I, featuring classic writers like Voltaire, Twain, Shakespeare, and Nietzsche, but also more surprising figures, such as Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali, Emily Dickinson, and Mae West. Some of the aphorists appear in English for the first time. But it is more than just a conventional anthology. It is also an encyclopedia, containing brief biographies of each author in addition to a selection of his or her aphorisms. The book is a field guide, too, with aphorists organized into eight different #8220;species,#8221; such as Comics, Critics Satirists; Icons Iconoclasts; and Painters Poets. The book#8217;s two indexes#8212;by author and by subject#8212;make it easily searchable, while its unique organizational structure and Geary#8217;s lively biographical entries make it different from all previous reference works.BR BRIGeary#8217;s Guide/I is eminently suitable for browsing or for sustained reading. A comprehensive guide to our most intimate, idiosyncratic literary form, the book is an indispensable tool for writers and public speakers as well as essential reading for all language lovers./DIV

4 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, good for inspiration   September 19, 2008
Hurricane Mitch (Atlanta, GA)
I originally purchased this book for help in writing my wedding vow. I didn't use it for that but find myself cracking it open for inspiration quite frequently. The index in the back is quite useful when one needs to find aphorisms for a certain specific subject. All in all, a good collection well executed.

I've been enjoying this book since I got it. It is especially good when you need something that you can pick up and read for a bit but then need to put it down. The brief biographical notes are especially interesting and I would have liked it if they had been more detailed.

4 out of 5 stars Handy for your reference library   November 27, 2007

This book is handy for your reference library, especially if you write for a living, be you an author or lawyer. br / br /The aphorism collection is great, and so are the short bios. But the attempt to fit aphorisms into various artificial categories seemed to reaching for something unnecessary, and one suspects that this book may have been edited up from a masters thesis.
