Product Description
To its millions of fans, country music is America's music, offering a window on the sweet dreams and cruel disappointments of ordinary American lives. Now the renowned Country Music Foundation, custodian of Nashville's legendary Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, has compiled a fascinating and infinitely useful guide to this beloved musical genre--The Encyclopedia of Country Music. Nearly 1,300 alphabetical entries put eight decades of country music at readers' fingertips, from the earliest '20s recordings of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers to the '90s chart-topping albums of LeAnn Rimes and Garth Brooks. A distinguished field of 137 contributors provides an eminently readable and reliable guide to the singers, songwriters, record companies, and industry movers and shakers who have made country music the increasingly popular--and profitable--juggernaut it is today. Hundreds of photographs, some never before published, accompany the text, including 75 color photographs from the CMF Library's record collection, surveying the history of the country music album cover. Twelve appendices provide lists of country's all-time best-selling albums, country music stations nationwide, all the country music awards won over the years, and much more. Authoritative, accessible, and unerringly accurate, The Encyclopedia of Country Music will delight fans. It is an essential reference for libraries, radio stations, and the entertainment industry.

5 out of 5 stars The best of its kind   February 22, 2008
Kenneth Cox (Dillon, SC)
When the word "Enclyclopedia" is used for Kingsbury's title, it is very accurate. It is super-detailed, well-written, and worth the price. If there is only one sourcebook for country music fans, this one is it. The only drawback is that the material does not reach past around 1997 - so, if one is looking for, let's say, the Peasall Sisters, they won't be found until there's at least a 2002-2005 update. Other than that, it's supergreat source material for classic (truly and not instant-classic) country.

3 out of 5 stars Not as encyclopedic as I'd hoped.   January 29, 2008

I probably approached this book with the wrong expectations, and therefore ended up disappointed. I conducted a random sample survey of entries, checking out Eddie Adcock, Gene Clark, Ginny Hawker and New Coon Creek Girls, none of whom appear - hardly comprehensive and definitive, I would say; perhaps they prefer to concentrate on mainstream Country (to the detriment of Bluegrass, Americana, etc.). br /The writing style tends towards the pedestrian - "he/she did this, did that, then died" - an anecdotal approach would have been more ineresting. br /For me, there are too many entries on such organisations as AFM, AFTRA, ARC and ASCAP, which I submit will be of little interest to the general reader, and take up precious space. br /There is a bibliographical essay, but again I found it a bit superficial, eg. there was no mention of Tammy Wynette's autobiography, Stand By Your Man - An Autobiography, which surely, since she was one of the great stars of the past 30 years, deserves at least a passing reference. br /For my money, a much better purchase would be the All Music Guide to Country: The Definitive Guide to Country Music. This is much more comprehensive, giving considered assessments of the artists and their works, with annotated lists of all their recordings, and using a star rating system.

3 out of 5 stars Inclusive   January 25, 2008

I like country music enough, but it is probably third or fourth on my favorite type of music to listen to. But I love the personalities and characters in Country music and that is why I got this. So even though it has every singer, band, producer, DJ, etc. you ever heard of included, I would like to have seen larger entries on the stars. Half a page or so doesn't seem to justice, especially when the entries are cut and dry.

I am a DJ at a traditional country/bluegrass radio station. I use the Encyclopedia of Country Music constantly to add color and flavor to my show. Contains all kinds of info and neat trivia for just about all traditional artists. Really great guide for any country music fan or professional.

Great compilation of all things country, from the by-gone days to the fairly current country stars.
