Product Description This exhaustive work offers readers at multiple levels key insights into the military, political, social, cultural, and religious origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is one of the world's bloodiest, longest running, most intractable regional disputes. Yet through the last 60 years, despite intermittent progress toward peace, the struggle between Israel and its Arab neighbors has remained as frustrating and potentially devastating as it has ever been. "Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A Political, Social, and Military History" is the first comprehensive general reference encompassing all aspects of the contentious Arab-Israeli relationship from Old Testament times to the present, with an emphasis on the era beginning with World War II."Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict" goes beyond simply recapping military engagements. In four volumes, offering 770 alphabetically organized entries, plus a separate documents volume, it provides a wide-ranging introduction to the distinct yet inextricably linked Arab and Israeli worlds and worldviews, exploring all aspects of the conflict. The objective analysis will help readers understand the dramatic events that have impacted the entire world, from the founding of modern Israel to the building of the Suez Canal, from the Six Day War to the Camp David Accords, from the assassinations of Anwar el-Sadat and Yitzhak Rabin to the rise and fall of Yasir Arafat, the 2006 Palestinian elections, and the Israeli-Hezbollah War in Lebanon. This title features: 770 alphabetically organized entries covering everything from important people, places, and events to a wide range of social and cultural topics - each entry featuring cross references and suggestions for further reading; a separate documents volume offering an unprecedented collection of over 180 essential primary sources; over 500 images, including maps, photographs, and illustrations; and, a comprehensive introductory overview by retired Major General Anthony Zinni. This work is the most comprehensive general resource available on the Arab-Israeli Wars. Its coverage is enhanced with primary and secondary source documents on the Arab-Israeli conflict. It ranges from Old Testament biblical times to the present, with an emphasis on the 20th-century events that have affected the entire world.

Extremely Biased and Prejudiced thru Selective Entries November 3, 2008 Romeo (Boston, MA) It is obvious thru the topics omitted that this encyclopedia is extremely biased and prejudiced; it is indeed scandalous. To give a few examples: br / br /- Massacres like those of Deir Yassin have an entry, but massacres by terrorists against Israeli and Jewish children like those of Kiryat Shmona, Ma'alot, in the seventies, do not get an entry br / br /- Massacres against Jews from Arab countries are totally omitted. For example, the two Cairo massacres that took places in the Jewish quarter in Cairo in 1948, and where several dozen Jews were killed, and nearly a hundred were injured, are not mentioned. Nor is a third massacre where six Jews were killed in downtown Cairo is mentioned. br / br /- The rape of Jewish women trying to escape Syria thru Lebanon in the seventies goes unmentioned. br / br /- Also unmentioned is the mass arrest of Egyptian Jewish males between the ages of 17 and 60 from 1967 thru 1970. Their incarceration and torture in the detention camps of Abu Za'abal and Tura for up to three years was an act of revenge for Egypt's defeat in the war against the Jews of Egypt. Many of these Jews were paraded as Israeli POW's in Ramses Square where they were abused by mobs. br / br /- The incarceration of Egyptian Jews in 1956, as well as their mass deportation out of the country, is never mentioned br / br /- Authors like Mahmoud Darweesh have an entry in the encyclopedia, but Israeli authors like Shmuel Yossef Agnon do not have an entry. Also absent from the entries is Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the man responsible for the revival of the Hebrew Language. This is the only case in history where a language long unused was revived. br / br /- Also unmentioned are Jewish authors from Arab countries like Albert Memi (author of Jews and Arabs).
An accessible, exhaustive and invaluable reference to a potentially critical modern issue July 12, 2008 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
A four-volume set, The Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A Political, Social, and Military History is an in-depth scrutiny of one of the most vicious, implacable, and long-running territorial disputes in the history of the world. In the past sixty years, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the increased scarcity of oil have dramatically amplified the global consequences of this conflict. The Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict provides an impartial wealth of information on this hot topic in over 750 alphabetically organized entries covering key people, places, events, and social topics. Each entry is enhanced with cross references and recommendations for further reading. Maps and photographs add a visual aid to comprehending this complicated issue. The final "documents" volume of The Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict is a collection of more than 150 primary sources. The result is an accessible, exhaustive and invaluable reference to a potentially critical modern issue, and carries the absolute highest recommendation for public and college libraries as well as international reference collections. br /
