3 out of 5 stars Not quite an encyclopedia   September 21, 2008

Provides a very broad overview of campaigns and a decent amount of pictures, but no way is this an "encyclopedia" of "uniforms." That being said, it is a decent value. You could buy 5-6 other lesser cost books (such as Osprey) and end up with the same amount of media.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrated Encyclopedia: Uniforms of the Napoleonic War   July 31, 2008

Excellent Napolionic Reference Book at a reasonable price. Look for the American Revolution version to come out in August.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, nice pictures   June 13, 2008
Karel Fous Ing (Prague, Czech republic)
Very nice, comprehensive book full of interesting information from all important parts of Napoleonic era. Only one I am missing - charts of uniform colours in FS or RAL standards. This book enrich my knowledge a lot. If there should be issued second part of this book, I definitely buy it.

Having waited for ages for this book to be published I was mightily disappointed when it eventually arrived. I would accept that this subject is a huge area but this book doesn't even scratch the surface. Lets take for example the French infantry uniforms of the period - generally blue and given that the French are the main focus of the Napoleonic wars you might expect to see some pictures of infantry in Blue - not in this book. br /This could have been the one stop shop for uniform info, sadly there are better sources elsewhere just not inside one cover yet.

Unlike what a poster said, none of the drawings from the book are rehashes from Osprey, they are all new. br / br /However, Digby Smith is none other than the real name of Otto von Pivka, the same guy who's written a ton of Ospreys. br / br /Having said that, I'm very disappointed in the book. Sorry Otto, but the writing is very poor, and the organization of the book is very poor. The text would be very confusing for a beginner. I would definitely not recommend this book for a beginner. br / br /The drawings are very nice though, but there are not enough of them. br / br /So who is this book for? No one. Like Odyseus said, no one should buy this book. The text is too confusing for the beginners and there are not enough of the nice pictures for anyone wanting any information on any particular country. br / br /If you have a medium sized reference library, you might get this just in case it has a picture of something you need. The pictures are nice and colorful, but that's it. I waited 2 years for this book and I'm disappointed!
