Although they do produce metabolic heat, they have no efficient means of conserving it or of increasing or decreasing its production. This means they have to absorb heat from the surrounding environment. Product Description The Heat Wave Terrarium Substrate Heater provides life sustaining warmth from under your glass aquarium. The Heat Wave provides a conductive heat source for reptiles, arachnids and amphibians who require "belly heat" that is important for metabolism, digestion, appetite and activity. The wide heating bars offer steady, safe and even heat distribution to the full surface of the heat-wave without hot spots or uneven temperature dispersion. The heat pad is ultra flat and is self-adhesive. It is perfect for both bottom dwellers when mounted under the terrarium and for geckos and other tree-dwelling reptiles when mounted on the back of the terrarium.Size:8" long x 8" wide. 8 Watt For terrariums 5-10 gallons.

Great for your ground-dwelling snake and/or lizard. June 3, 2007 Squash 'N' Squeak (The Darkest Regions of Outer Space) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this about 4 years ago when I purchased my ball python along with all of its necesities (terrarium, hiding box, etc). This heat pad hasn't failed once in its 4 years, and is perfect for a lizard or if your snake is non-aboreal (such as mine). Not only does it creat a great heat source for my snake, but it's safe to use. Unlike the electric heat rocks that PetCo and PetSmart try to shove down your throat, heat pads don't give your reptile 3rd degree burns. Heat pads also help your reptiles digestions. br / br /If you need a heating device for your reptile that doesn't spend it's time in trees, look no further.
