Excellent quality September 14, 2008 Creative Earth (CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've used several cheaper hose reels from different manufacturers (I have an acre of garden and over 1000 ft of hoses scattered around the property) and this one is much, much better quality. It is all metal, the central "axle" or shaft is machined from solid aluminum (not just cast, or worse yet, plastic) with a good sized snap ring on the end, hose fittings are solid brass and very sturdy, the handle is sturdy and well made (and "keyed" to the central shaft with a bolt that goes through it and the shaft, not just a "set screw" type friction attachment that will eventually wear and spin on the shaft when you try to roll up a long/heavy hose), and the supplied hose (to connect to your faucet) is heavy duty. If you know something about metal machining and understand the difference between solid machined parts and cheaper cast (or even worse, stamped) metal parts you'll appreciate the quality of this hose reel. I'm going to replace all of my cheaper reels (which are all leaking and malfunctioning or falling apart in one way or another after just a couple years) with this model. And Lowe's has it for just $75. Compared to the much lower quality (and mostly plastic) reels that sell for $50-$60 or more, it is more than worth every penny.
Horrible Product, Even Worse Company August 22, 2008 M. Allshouse (York, PA USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought one of these a week ago. The first thing I noticed was that the paint was chipped on the reel. I took it back and got another. Then I read the instructions, which say that you need a 7/16" masonry bit to attach it to a brick wall. I went back to Lowes to get one, but found that they do not carry that size bit. I checked Home Depot and Harbor Freight Tools and they do not carry that bit either. I called Ames and asked about the drill bit. They told me that the instructions were printed wrong and that I would need a 9/16" bit, not 7/16". br / br /So, wasting even more of my time, I go back to Lowes only to find that they don't carry 9/16" either. Again, same at Home Depot and Harbor Freight. I call Ames back again and they explain that I should use a 1/2" bit and just "rout out the hole with that bit." Okay, so I try this and I actually get one of the anchor sleeves in the brick. I take the next one out of the package and find that it was manufactured wrong and will require a 3/4 inch bit, or bigger, in order to fit it into the brick. It's nearly an 1/8 of an inch bigger than all of the other sleeves! br / br /Finally, I call Ames corporate office and ask to speak to someone in the CEO's office. I get a woman who tells me that she is an Assistant to the President. I explain all of the difficulties I have had and express my frustration with the poor quality product. She glibbly asks what I think she can do about it. It's pretty obvious that she could care less. She tells me that it's a quality issue and that's not her area? I asked what her area is, just putting out bad products and scooping up cash? She finally wakes up and tells me that she is "offended." I told her that I was "offended" at having to buy and rebuy the bad product, wasting my time with misprinted instructions, and then trying to make poorly constructed product fit on my own. She suggested I not buy their product and disconnected. I then got the answering machine of the quality control manager, left a message, and have not yet received a return call. br / br /The best advice that I can give anyone thinking of buying anything from Ames is to take the Assistant to the President's advice and don't do it. I will never buy anything from Ames/True Temper, and I suggest that you avoid doing so, too.
Ames Wall Mount Reel June 22, 2008 Kent Sauter 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Everything that you need to mount is in the box except a masonry drill bit. I mounted into brick and needed a 1/2" masonry drill bit. Masonry anchors included. Well built, solid. Regarding the stiffness previously described in another review: Not noticeable after mounting to wall. Most importantly, no LEAKS! Would have liked a longer faucet connection hose. Wife can reel in hose with no problem. Highly recommended.
Very stiff reel April 16, 2008 John Henry 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Looks nice, but returned it before I mounted it. The reel is very stiff. I tried loosening a few screws but didn't help (it comes fully assembled). I think I will try the Rapid Reel that everyone's raving about.
