5 out of 5 stars Awesome!   November 30, 2008

5 out of 5 stars Great Radio; now I don't have to carry around TWO Zunes!   November 30, 2008

I have the 80 GB Zunes -- well, actually several because I separate my classical music collection from my popular music -- and because I don't like to compress down which can have a negative impact on sound quality of the music br / br /I can't speak to all the supposed bells and whistles associated with the Zune (i.e. WIFI access, playing movies etc). Maybe I'm just old but I don't really care about youtube videos and really -- can't see watching movies on anything smaller than a computer screen. If I'm not near a TV, then I'll read or knit but I have to have my music! I do have to say that I have used the radio at work and it works well to get my local NPR station so that is a big bonus!! br / br /I'm traveling again and in this post 911 era, need my music to keep me chilled out in the airport and in cubicles. I preferred the aesthetics of the 1st Zune -- the matt finish better than the newer "Piano finish" shiny finger-print album viewer of the new interface but since I put this in a leather case, I can live with the new "look". br / br /I'm not into downloading music off the web. I take my CDs and copy them with the highest possible bit rate as possible for the best sound quality. I don't really care about the extra storage required for this since my alternative is hauling a CD Walkman and a bunch of CDs around with me (everything's relative). With the 30GB Brown selling for [....], I can carry two -- one with my classical music library and one with my "normal" music. br / br /I have top of the line Shure ear buds and the combination produced outstanding sound quality -- not to mention being able to be in my own little bubble by blocking outside noise. The interface is very simple to use. I had no problems with the software installation (I'm using Windows XP) or syncing. br / br /In summary, I really like it and it is a "mind saver" while you are flying on noisy cramped claustrophobic regional airplanes. I also like the fact that I can get my NPR fix at work without yet another gadget living there (my company doesn't allow streaming audio through our computers). I highly recommend this product. br / br /NCJAR br / br /

The software that comes with it works when it feels like, I had to reformat the Zune twice in the space of 2 weeks, thereby losing all my music. Get an ipod!

I bought this Nov 2008 after much research, I was turned off from Ipod anyway I digress. br /My reason for buying is for future use in my car and to not have Cd's Cases floating around. br /I am not gonna cover, basics as every other reviewers will do this. Here I will mention a few issues that may make a difference or help you. br / br /a) Make sure you buy a case/screen guard for it right away, I have a leather case, but it does not allow me to sync without removing it first. br /b) You will need additional software to rip DVD's to it, there are loads of free ones out there and for the tech savvy I guess this is the way to go... I use CuCusofts DVD to Zune software ($30) but it works well. br / br /NOTE: use the output setting of "ZuneMP4" this works the best on this software converting to Wmv or H.264 just doesnt work well trust me. br / br /c) get an ac/charger for it right away too, its a pain to have to "turn on" your computer, just to charge your Zune br / br /The biggest problem with it, (for me) is that it does NOT (as of writing this with 3.1 software) have a VIDEO playlist feature, this is a nuisance.....so I have loads of music videos + a few movies and you have to scroll through to the one you want, in addition my thought process was to install a 7" TV screen in my truck and play music videos via a list... of course for now this is not possible. br / br /Its even worse, if like some you have loads of TV shows and want to watch them in order. br / br /with the exception of this, everything has worked flawlessly and I would recommend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Easier and smarter than iPod   November 27, 2008

I highly recommend Zune with Zune Pass. I have a mid sized music collection. (I think I have 7000 MP3s ripped from music I own). If YOU LOVE MUSIC, subscription makes total sense. I can't think of any reason a music lover should choose an iPod over a Zune - EVEN IF YOU ONLY BUY MUSIC. Read on for my reasons... br / br /I am a 30 something guy who hasn't been swayed by the masses when it comes to choosing an MP3 player. I use iTunes to buy/rent movies, and was using RhapsodyToGo and a PlaysForSure device for subscription music. My mp3 player was an older model, and small. So I was faced with the decision of upgrading to something new. Frankly I wanted a device like the iPod or Zune that SUPPORTS PlaysForSure because I like the Rhapsody service. (This is my only MAJOR complaint with Apple and Microsoft - and my voice only joins the chorus - Give us a device that will Play ALL MY CONTENT, regardless of where I bought it.) So with that criteria, I had to decide between iTunes/iPod - and Zune/Zune Pass. br / br /First I had to decide which was the better device; regardless of what I wanted to do with it. So I went up to the local Big Box to demo both devices... br / br /**For the first time in recent memory Microsoft has taken Apple to school on the USER INTERFACE.*** br / br /The Zune simply blows the iPod out of the water on Ease of use, feel, navigation, etc. I had never touched a Zune, and I *instantly* knew where to find EVERYTHING on it - and could find it, quickly and easily. I picked up the iPod and fumbled around for about 10 seconds, and knew immediately that the Zune was easier. Another KEY feature was the size of the screen, and the size of the text. While I would never recommend it ;) , tuning to a new song on the road is much easier with a large, easy to navigate interface. Now add the Wireless interface to the mix, and I was quickly sold on which DEVICE was the better machine. (I can walk into my house and sync my ZUNE with my PC over my WIRELESS connection- That rocks.) br / br /Next - I had to decide what I wanted to do with it? Buy Music? Rent Music? Watch Video? If all I wanted to do was watch MOVIES from iTunes on my player, I was in trouble. However, Zune does have the most popular TV shows available. br / br /-Buying music - Well I don't buy music, but if I did, I can get most everything from the Zune service, and if I have to buy from iTunes, I will find a way to convert it if it doesn't already come as an MP3. I don't really buy music anymore anyway, I rent it- so... br / br /Renting - The idea of having to dump Rhapsody really irked me. It's a great service. But the future of PlaysForSure doesn't feel solid to me, so... br / br /Zune Pass: This is great software, the social features are great, it doesn't hog system resources, it has a beautiful interface, and it mirrors the interface on the Zune device. It is much more advanced than iTunes. Library management is a breeze and navigation is effortless. The only minor complaint I have is that managing the "now playing" list could be a improved with click and drag. (This could be me not figuring it out yet -which is the only thing I see that goes counter to the ease of use of everything else associated with this device.) br / br /Zune Pass Content: Okay, no doubt Apple has it all over Microsoft right now on content, if for no other reason than the movie collection. The Music selection on Zune is acceptable though, and if you like PodCasts and popular TV you won't be disappointed. br / br /In the end, I cannot think of any reason to buy an iPod, other than to say, "Of course I have an iPod." So if you are looking for a fashion accessory, read another review. (I am not qualified to determine if an iPod is sexier than a Zune. -though I'd say its not.) If you are looking for the best MP3 player - look no farther than the Zune. br / br /*** br /One final note: There is more to the Zune than I have covered here. Look up info on the Social features, sharing music and discovering new music. Microsoft has really done this thing right. (And make no mistake, I love to bash Microsoft- but in the case, its just not deserved at all.) br / br / br /
