Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
"The record is called Departure for a number of reasons," says Jesse McCartney, whose multi-platinum 2004 debut album Beautiful Soul launched his career as an international singing star. "There have been departures in my career, in my personal life. I've learned a lot since doing my first couple of records. I think I've landed in the most comfortable place I've ever been musically as the style of music, my vocals and the lyrical content of the songs on this album. I co-wrote several songs on the new album, and learned a lot from the producers I worked with. In the process of writing for my own project, I wound up writing "Bleeding Love" with Ryan Tedder for Leona Lewis. Departure has a little more of mature sound than what my fans previously heard from me but this is the road that I'm on right now and it's the road that I believe they'll join with me!" With star writers and hit making producers such as Sean Garrett (Usher, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani, Pussycat Dolls, Chris Brown), Tricky The-Dream (Rihanna, Mariah Carey), J.R. Rotem (Britney Spears, Sean Kingston, 50 Cent, Rihanna) and The Clutch (Omarion, Timbaland, Ciara, Bobby Valentino), Departure has an edgier pop/urban sound than Beautiful Soul and Jesse's sophomore album, 2006's Right Where You Want Me reflecting Jesse's growth as a songwriter and young man. "When it was time to do my third album, I wanted people to see another side of me. I wanted the record to have a little retro hint sonically but with a my own contemporary feel - I listened to the music of Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince a lot before we started the album. I knew I had to present myself in a fresh way so I was open to other people's ideas and suggestions, especially since I was working with such great writers and producers." As the co-writer of many of the album's songs, Jesse chose to share the experiences he's had since Beautiful Soul made him a household name throughout the U.S. and in a dozen or more countries, from Italy to Japan. "I recorded my first solo album when I was 16. A lot has happened since then and this new album reflects my experiences growing up over the past couple of years and various stages of family and personal relationships. I bought my first home. I've been fortunate enough to tour all over the world which meant being away from my family and friends for very lengthy times. I've experienced all the ups and downs of relationships people my age go through. That's why I think fans who've grown up with me will relate to the songs on Departure, many of which do have an autobiographical feel."

5 out of 5 stars McCartney's Departure Catapults Him to the Top   November 24, 2008

Jesse McCartney's latest album Departure is exactly what the title depicts. This new and improved sound from McCartney is a welcomed change from his previous Disney infused music. Don't get me wrong, his earlier albums and songs had an appeal, but Departure blows his previous LP's out of the water. br / br /First on the album is the upbeat and catchy jam "Leavin'", which was the first single off Departure. America has positively responded to the more RB infused sound "Leavin'" brings to the table, making it the number one song of Summer 2008 with five consecutive weeks atop the Mediabase Top 40 Charts and Radio. br / br /Next up is "It's Over", the second single from McCartney on this LP. "It's Over" is a fan favorite and a song you will often find you have on repeat on your iPod or singing along to loudly in the car. This song's addictive beat and emotionally distinctive lyrics make it one of the stand out songs on the album. br / br /Some other favorites on the album include the happy-go-lucky "How Do You Sleep?" that you can't help but bust a move to, as well as the sultry track "Told You So" that engages your full attention. The RB beats from "My Baby" and "Relapse" won't disappoint either. They have great dance appeal to them that will get you up off you feet and onto the dance floor. "Runnin'" is another track that harnesses the "it" factor listeners are demanding. Its smooth flow and rhythmic tones are aiming to please. br / br /Overall you can't go wrong with owning this album. There are numerous songs on Departure that everyone can relate to and enjoy, girls and guys. Departure is exactly as it reads and McCartney's new and more mature sound is a huge leap in the right direction. br /

4 out of 5 stars A welcome departure for Jesse McCartney?   November 23, 2008
FixMe
Jesse McCartney. To teenage girls, a sex symbol. To guys, well, the guy who gets all the girls. But despite multi-platinum appeal in the beginning, McCartney's career sort of went the other way after the somewhat deflated sales figures for his sophomore release. And as the trend goes, he's returned from relative obscurity with a new image and musical direction. br / br /Departure is indeed a fitting title to this third effort, as McCartney changes things up with a more Urban/RB club oriented sound. Gone are the Disney-fied overtones of his previous releases in a blatant, though admittedly successful bid for a return to mainstream relevance. Though to be fair, there are traces of his former sound on Departure. br / br /The opening track, "Leavin'", is also the first single off of Departure, and it sets the consistently beat-oriented, "produced" vibe of the record. It's catchy Top 20 material, and probably one of the stronger tracks on the album. "It's Over" keeps the vibe and flow going, leading into the decidely poppy and charmingly childish "How Do You Sleep?" McCartney employs a lot of falsetto, textural flourishes, and emotive inflection, which sort of balances out the otherwise spit-shine sound of the production. br / br /A couple of the tracks are kind of weak compared to the rest of the record. "Into Ya", "Runnin'" - these are ones I tend to skip over in favor of the more engrossing pop melodies of "Told You So", "How Do You Sleep", and "Relapse" - which lends a distinct dance-pop flavor that is littered generously throughout Departure. It is indeed a rather interesting hybrid of styles and textures that give Jesse a bit more cred than some of the more vanilla Top 40 acts of today. br / br /I was rather shocked that, despite the album's solid and mostly consistent track list, there was one song that stood out above all. "Not Your Enemy" is an infectious pop ballad with all of the hallmarks of what would have been a huge hit a few decades ago. From the orchestral backdrop to the piano-driven melody, it drips pure Adult Contemporary in the vein of the classics. The song has a magic about it, and it creates warmth while distinguishing itself from the other tracks on Departure. br / br /Jesse McCartney is a strong writer and a great vocalist, and he will probably be around for a while yet - even despite the fact that he may never match the multi-platinum success of Beautiful Soul. Departure is a solid record with a surprising, though modest twist in an otherwise crowded sea of generic.

1 out of 5 stars This is still teen pop!   September 23, 2008

I'm sick of people saying that "Leavin" was RB. It is NOT RB. It may have been produced and written by The-Dream but it's not RB! This is pure teen pop. I don't care if he is 21. He sounds 15 and the lyrics are horrible. Why didn't he write the hit single "Leavin" if he is such a good songwriter? He isn't. He is pretty bad. "Its Over" flopped and I can see why. Maybe he "wrote" that one too (he always seems to "Write" songs with other writers, not by himself LMAO). Anyhoo don't buy this unless you want to hear bad teen pop crap.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!!!   August 26, 2008

This is Jesse's best album to date. The album has songs for all occasions and I just love the beats on most of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Jesse's Best Work Yet   August 11, 2008

Jesse McCartney's new album Departure is absolutely the best work he's ever done. The CD introduces a new sound from the pop star that's more striking and catchy than any other material he's put out thus far. Departure definitely separates itself from Jesse's other albums by showcasing a more mature sound with its upbeat RB influenced songs. The first single off the album, "Leavin'" is this summer's number one hit, reaching the top of numerous charts including radio and billboard. Many of the songs on the CD follow the rhythmic beat of Leavin', but there are also some slower ballads on the album that fans will appreciate who liked his older work. Working on this album with McCartney are some big names in the business. Producers include: Tricky (Rihanna, Britney Spears, Madonna, Mariah Carey), The Dream (Rihanna, Usher, Ciara), The Clutch (Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown), Sean Garrett (Beyonce, Britney Spears, Chris Brown). These producers have helped write numerous hits for the artists listed above. I know for a fact Jesse will have a few more hits under his belt from his new LP Departure. This album certainly sets the bar in Jesse's career, no doubt about it. br / br /Here are some reviews from established music critics: PopJustice.com reviewed the album, and said "Departure repositions McCartney alongside Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown and stands as an exciting, brilliantly produced landmark on the post-'Maneater' pop landscape. While referring to "My Baby", one of the album's tracks, they went on to say "if Michael Jackson was recording 'Off the Wall' in 2008 it would probably sound a bit like this." Chris A Sosa of Musicouch states that "Jesse's Departure...marks a step in the right direction for McCartney".
