Amazon.com The rock roll road show never really caught on, which is surprising given that Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs Englishmen revue showed tour dogs how it's done. Recorded live at New York's Fillmore East in the spring of 1970, this set (as well as a film of the same name) documents a slapdash extravaganza (the whole thing was conceived, organized, and abandoned over the course of two months) that overflows with big, brassy, rockin' soul. Front and center is Joe Cocker, a spastically charismatic Brit soul shouter. The bandleader is Leon Russell, playing some of the best rock piano ever waxed. And the crack company (boasting 21 singers and players) features the Rolling Stones' future horn section and Derek the Dominoes' rhythm-section-in-waiting. Cocker shines on "Cry Me a River," "Give Peace a Chance," "The Letter," and a slew of other covers that benefit greatly from the volcanic arrangements whipped up by Russell and Chris Stainton. It may have been the Ray Charles revue for the Woodstock Generation, but, shockingly, the Genius himself hasn't made too many records that surpass this one. i--Steven Stolder/i
Album Description In the pantheon of classic live albums as well as concert films, Joe Cocker's iMad Dogs Englishmen/i is near the top, alongside iWoodstock/i and iThe Last Waltz/i in defining the spirit of a generation. The tour, album and film catapulted Cocker, Leon Russell, and Rita Coolidge to stardom. Now, for the first time, the album, originally issued in 1970, is heard with previously unreleased tracks and studio cuts. The two-CD iMad Dogs Englishmen: 35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition/i reveals in full for the first time the repertoire of the craziest, loudest, longest rock 'n' roll circus to have ever hit America. Along with already-legendary performances of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," "The Letter," "Delta Lady," "Bird on a Wire," "Cry Me a River," "Feelin' Alright," "Let's Go Get Stoned," and "Space Captain" are seven previously unreleased live performances (whose inclusion now reflects the actual sequence of the show's set list) and four rare studio recordings.p/pThe debuting live performances are of Cocker's "The Weight," "Something," "Darling Be Home Soon," and "With a Little Help from My Friends"; Leon Russell's "Hummingbird" and "Dixie Lullaby"; and Don Preston's "Further On up the Road." In addition, Claudia Lennear's performance of "Let It Be," a single B-side, makes its album premiere. That recording, as well as Rita Coolidge's "Superstar," were taped at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium; the other performances took place earlier at the Fillmore East. Added too are the studio singles sessions of Russell's "The Ballad of Mad Dogs Englishmen," the previously unreleased "Warm-Up Jam" (including "Under My Thumb"); the album debut and stereo debut of the single B-side "Space Captain" as well as "The Letter."p/pThe tour rolled across America, from Detroit to New York to California, from March to May 1970. With Cocker in his prime, driven by a phenomenal band; ringmaster Russell; three drummers; horn section; 10-strong choir; wives, lovers and children; film crew; roadies; and a black-and-white-spotted dog, the tour was one of the greatest and most colorful in history. Thirty-five years later, the excitement of iMad Dogs Englishmen/i remains.

Joe Cocker August 22, 2008 Connie Long (Bellingham, WA USA) I was at this concert when they played in Seattle, the best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to lots and lots. I love this deluxe edition. I had owned the record album, but because of divorce I lost all my music. It's wonderful to get some of it back
I remember... May 24, 2008 H. Spikol (W. Chester, PA) I saw this show live in Philadelphia, and must say that this newly remastered-bonus tracks issue is the closest thing to being there (sans bic lighter flicking, hazy air, etc.) I cannot remember whether the show was solo or if they opened for anyone (might have been Pink Floyd). The entire entourage was on stage- kids, pets, musicians, etc. This stands out as an amazing re-capture of one of the most high energy and passionate performances in history.
the best..... May 17, 2008 Peter D. hirschl (here i am) this is one of the greatest albums ever made. take this one to the desert island.
Mad dogs rock October 20, 2007 S J Buck (Kent, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is one of the best live albums ever recorded. The first track which is called 'Introduction' and lasts 41 seconds tells you a lot. A punchy brass section, and a great drummer (either Jim Gordon or Jim Keltner) who drives everything along. Straight into track 2 which is a stonking cover of the Stones 'Honky Tonk Woman'. Joe Cocker sounds like he's singing through broken glass, and the band rock in way that few bands can these days. br / br /Another reason why this album was such a success was the appearance of Leon Russell whose presence is felt throughout the album on Piano and Guitar. If you've ever seen the film of this tour you'll know that he virtually stole the show from everybody with his Top Hat and huge white beard (not so out of place in 1970!). You can hear his distinctive Piano on the intro to another superb cover; 'Cry me River'. This track like all the uptempo tracks on this album has that gospel feel because of the backing choir and Joe Cocker's broken singing voice. br / br /The other well known members of the band are: br /Chris Stainton - frequently Claptons regular keyboard player br /Bobby Keys - Tenor Sax br /Rita Coolidge - Vocals br / br /When listening to the band introductions and the interludes between the songs it becomes rather obvious that a lot of the band were either very stoned or had drunk a huge quantity of alcohol! Its also worth saying that this was recorded 37 years ago now, so for those used to crystaline modern recording techniques this probably sound horrible. However if you prefer your music carved from Rock rather than made in the studio by a computer, you want some soul, a big gospel influence and some driving rock 'n' roll this can't be beaten. br /
