4 out of 5 stars Slick Production, Good Reviews - Caution: A Lot of Nudity   December 15, 2008
CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA)
"American Photo" is a very well produced magazine that focuses (no pun intended) on fashion, professional, and high end photography. Mixed into the pages are a lot of truely good photos, book and product reviews, and interviews with artists and professionals. If you are serious about photography, the magazine is worth the subscription price. br / br /That being said one note of caution needs to be made, there are a lot "artistic" images that can be disturbing and there is a lot nudity mixed in almost gratuitously. I have no real problem with either for adults, but do not leave this one where my kids might pick it up. br / br /Overall, a high quality magazine! Recommended

1 out of 5 stars ... photography is more than naked woman...   August 15, 2006

I cancelled my subscription to this magazine 6 months ago with a letter to the editor stating that I loved to see nude woman, but subscribed to learn from the masters about photography. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when I resubscribed after not taking the magazine for years... it used to be a wonderful magazine chock full of insightful articles, lighting techniques, studio setup diagrams, lots of great stuff... I subscribed to a 2 year deal through an online subscriber and asked them to quit sending it after only 6 months and to keep the money. br / br /Not worth the paper it is printed on- period. Apeture I hear is pretty good, and I also hear Popular Photography has gotten much better and now only 95% about advertising and product reviews and at least 5% helpful tips and tricks...

5 out of 5 stars BEST PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE OUT THERE!   March 29, 2005

American PHOTO has an indepth look at alot of various subjects. There are some photos of real life situations experiences. The latest issue depicted the Iraq war situation, how some of the soldiers Iraqi civilians are coping with what's going on around them. br /The magazine also has alot more close-up detailed photo's, so even the amateur photographer can enjoy it. I have been a subscriber to American PHOTO for many years probably will continue to subscribe for as long as the magazine is in existence, or the rest of my life, whichever comes first. I collect each every issue. br /I love America PHOTO!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good creative photography magazine aimed towards glamour   December 18, 2004

American Photo is a much better magazine than its sibling Popular Photography, but frankly, that is not saying much. It seems as though its primary market is fashion/glamour photographers since most of its issues are devoted to these aspects of professional photography. There are other magazines which excel at nature photography, so I am not disappointed by its absence here, but not noting more fine art documentary photograhy is a major omission which I hope this magazine does address eventually. There are also excellent photo equipment reviews frequently written by working professionals, as opposed solely to in-house technical equipment overviews. American Photo is without question among the better photo magazines currently available, but unless you are interested mainly in fashion and glamour photography, you might wish to look more closely at Shutterbug or other magazines devote to nature and fine art photography.
