3 out of 5 stars Leslie Dame and quality perception through price   December 7, 2008

I didn't buy mine at Amazon but caught a deal at Fry's for $74.99. I feel sorry for those who paid anywhere from $250 to over $300 for this piece of "furniture" The piece arrived well packed with corner guards and appropriate padding and is assembled except for the shelving. I've seen the online stores list the weight as anywhere from 88 to 100 lbs. I don't know if the idea there is to induce the buyer into a sense of assurance that the piece is indeed solid oak? Who knows? Or possibly the walnut, cherry etc. versions weigh somewhat more. That again, I don't know. To Leslie Dame's credit, they list it on their site as 70 lbs and indeed the box says 26 kg net ( only 57 lbs for the piece) and 31 kg gross or 68 lbs crated. Well, it is solid wood, but I've installed solid oak vanities in the bathrooms and used oak baseboard extensively in remodeling our house. Oak is a heavy, dense wood without knots but what this piece is, is nothing more than Chinese made oak veneers in select places over a pine core. The shelves on mine are un-veneered oak stained pine and almost as light as Balsa. The "dovetailing" is merely dovetailed veneer. Look at the underside of the board and the dovetail does not go through. So this is decorative dovetailing and not structural. For me, it will suit my needs of storing about 200-250 discs in slimline jewel cases. What few VHS tapes and the like I still have, will go on the doors. It doesn't surprise me at all that others have reported that the piece sags when loaded. At 75 dollars I think its a good buy provided that one doesn't stress it too much in trying to fill it to capacity. If I had payed much more or God help me, $300 as have others, I'd have been royally pissed off.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing   May 3, 2008

We were excited when this first arrived because it's real wood and looks great. But a week or so after loading it up with CD's the reality sank in--this cabinet is under-built. The weight of the CD's has caused the doors to sag so much that the front gap is 1/8" at the top and 5/8" at the bottom and the doors now drag on the base when opening. Removing all the CDs and tightening the screws did not help. I'm probably going to have to install full-length hinges to fix this inadequate design. Considering the cost, this is a terrible buy.

3 out of 5 stars Good quality, solid wood media storage cabinet   December 14, 2007

This cabinet was pretty much as advertised, and about what I expected. The exterior of the cabinet is attractive and appears to be well made. I was somewhat surprised at the number of pieces to sort out, and the interior shelves were not finished to the same level of quality as the main part of the cabinet. All the wood was solid - no veneers or press-wood. It is a good value for the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great cabinet   November 23, 2007

We've had one of these cabinets for about a year. We kept DVDs, VHF tapes, and CDs in it for a while during which time the adjustable shelves helped maximize space utilization. Now it is full of just DVDs. It easily stores 240 DVDs, seems to handle the weight well and is a nice looking piece of durable furniture.
