Amazon.com Review This ultra-efficient six-piece set includes the three blades a typical home chef uses most: an eight-inch chef's knife for all-around kitchen work like mincing garlic and chopping vegetables, a parer for small-scale tasks like trimming and peeling, and a utility knife for slicing meats, sandwiches, and other sundries. Also included are shears for snipping herbs or opening packages, a bamboo block to store and protect knives, and a sharpening steel. Attractively packaged in a special gift box, this set makes an unforgettable gift for newlyweds, budding chefs, or anyone who appreciates kitchen tools as beautiful as they are functional and long-lasting. br Shun knives are made from VG-10 stainless steel, specially constructed to be harder, less brittle, but also more flexible than traditional steel formulations. The VG-10 core is then clad with 16 full layers of high-carbon stainless steel on each side, for a grand total of 33 layers. These layers not only protect the VG-10, they create an exquisitely-detailed surface reminiscent of Damascus or pattern-forged steel, the kind once used for Samurai swords. As a result, these knives are simply stunning to look at--much like antique Damascus knives but without their tendency to rust. As an additional benefit, the slight patterning helps slice rather than crush delicate foods and keeps cut food from sticking to the blade. Like many Asian-style knives, these feature handles that are especially suited to smaller users. In contrast to the traditional round profile, however, Shun's are D-shaped to prevent the knife from twisting in the hand, providing extra stability and a firm grip. The handles are made from ebony-colored Pakkawood, a fused blend of hardwood veneers imbued with waterproof resin that combines the warmth and traditional look and feel of wood with the strength and durability of plastic. The offset stainless steel bolster is designed for ergonomic comfort and maximum safety, while a stainless steel end cap provides the finishing touch. As sturdy as they are lovely, these knives are officially safe to put in the dishwasher--although they're so good-looking you might find yourself hard-pressed to do so. Shun knives are covered by a limited lifetime warranty. Product Description Made in Japan, where kitchen cutlery is an art form, Shun is widely admired by professional chefs for its precision performance and cutting-edge design. The stunning Classic line is produced by the Kasumi Method, the traditional Japanese knife making style that clads protective layers of stainless-steel over a core of extremely hard carbon steel. These Shun knife block sets feature a Damascus moirA pattern steel blade with a precision edge that makes cleaner slices and speeds food prep. For optimum comfort, the unique "D" shape handle design rests smoothly in curve of your fingers as they curl around the handle. The asymmetrical bolster is ground out more on the right side to provide proper finger placement and a comfortable, secure grip. Each knife balances perfectly, with the pivot point just ahead of where the handle sweeps out of the blade. brbrb6-Piece Set Includes/bbr#149; 3 1/2" paring knife br#149; 6" utility knife br#149; 8" chef's knife br#149; sharpening steel br#149; kitchen shears br#149; bamboo storage blockbrbrbProduct Features/bbr#149; VG-10 stainless "super steel" holds an incredibly sharp edge longerbr#149; Blade's distinctive moirA pattern helps ensure superior strengthbr#149; Razor-sharp, long-lasting edge is ground to 16 degree anglebr#149; "D"-shaped handle design for supreme comfort and controlbr#149; Ebony-black PakkaWood genuine wood handle is infused with a waterproof resin for long-lasting durabilitybr#149; Full tang construction adds stabilitybr#149; Stainless-steel bolsters and end caps for superior safety and controlbr#149; Rockwell Hardness rating of 61 safeguards a superior sharp edgebr#149; Dishwasher-safe, but hand-washing recommendedbr#149; NSF approvedbr#149; Made in Japanbr#149; Limited lifetime warrantyb6-Piece Set/bbr#149; Model: DM2002Bbr#149; Overall Weight: 10 3/4 lbs.

Awesome Knives October 24, 2007 xian98 (Socorro, New Mexico United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Worth the money! Learn what a knife is supposed to be like and then understand why these are the best. Be sure to take care of them properly, and they'll stay razor sharp.
Highly Recommend September 1, 2007 Angelo (Narragansett, RI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I own 3 different sets of knives, including Wusthof and Henckles. The Shun knives are very nice, and good to handle. I also like my Wusthof knives, and don't want to take away from those. Not all that happy with the Henckles.
Best I've ever had August 15, 2007 L. Jackson (Mojave, CA USA) I have small hands and I love to cook. I've tried for 30 years to find just the right knives that handled well and did their jobs. These do it and then some. Too pretty and elegant to keep hidden, I look for excuses to use them. I have other knives including a Kyocera ceramic 5" slicer that I like because it is light weight, but I always return to the Shun. As another reviewer says, better than five stars as far as I am concerned.

i had a german santoku knife and used it for many years prior to switching to shun recommended by my friend. br / br /The knives are all well balanced and sharp. so far, I like them very much. however, the paring knife is a little bit stiff as compared to other brands.
Best knives! January 9, 2007 J. Ferry 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I loved my Shun Classic 6.5" Santoku knife, so I purchased a 6-piece set (except my set came with a 9" serrated bread knife instead of the utility knife). Shun is the best! For the most control and best grip, I was told to hold the knife close to the blade with my index finger on the metal ridge. It seemed a little awkward at first, but it's very comfortable once you get used to it! I love the weight of the knives, the wooden handles, and the sharpness of the blades. They do, however, need to be sharpened occasionally (I judge this by how well they cut through a tomato). I was told that you should use the boning steel every time you use a knife, but I have never used it. Instead I've been using the MinoSharp Plus sharpener, which sharpens the knives extremely well. If I could only have one knife I'd get the 6.5" Santoku (not in this set) because I use it far more often than any other knife. However, the large chef's knife is much better for cutting large, hard foods like squashes and melons. I love the multi-functional scissors (they come apart so you can sharpen them and clean them well), and I like being able to protect my knives and keep them together in the wooden block.
