Amazon.com Review
Cutting with a Chroma Type 301 knife is like driving a Porsche, and for good reason. Designed by Ferdinand A. Porsche (the designer of the Porsche 911) with input from renowned Austrian chef Joerg Woerther, Chroma Type 301 cutlery excels in both performance and looks. Sleek and sexy, each knife looks like one seamless piece, but the blade and handle are actually different types of steel. The blade is crafted of superfine Japanese 301 steel and hand-sharpened into an acutely sharp angle for precision cutting. The handle is made of durable 18/10 stainless steel, triangular in profile and flat-topped for leverage, a totally unique and ergonomic design. Announcing the transition spot between handle and blade is a metal "pearl" that lets the fingers know their position, in place of a bolster. The comfort and control, not to mention the spectacular visual appeal, of a Chroma Type 301 knife have made ardent converts of many chefs worldwide. p This 5-piece Chroma starter set consists of four versatile knives and a bamboo/wood storage block. In the set you'll find a 3-1/4-inch paring knife for peeling fruit and shaping garnishes; 5-inch utility knife, for everything from slicing an apple to cutting a sandwich; 7-1/4-inch santoku, an Asian chef's knife with a straight edge and rounded spine near the point, exceptional for fine slicing and chopping; and a 10-inch chef's knife, that all-purpose workhorse for chopping, mincing, dicing, and slicing. Two extra slots in the block let you add more knifes as you become addicted to these extraordinary knives. And, a stainless-steel pin through the block unscrews so you can take the whole thing apart for cleaning. After use, Chroma Type 301 knives should be immediately washed and dried by hand. To sharpen, use only a Chroma original 301 whetstone, never a sharpening steel which can damage the fine blades. Chroma Type 301 knives make exceptional gifts and are covered by a lifetime warranty against defects. I--Ann Bieri/I p bWhat's in the Box/bbr 5-piece cutlery set. The set consists of: 3-1/4-inch paring knife; 5-inch utility knife; 7-1/4-inch santoku; 10-inch chef's knife; bamboo/wood block. 5 pieces total.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish and surprisingly well made   April 14, 2006

I bought this set last Christmas on eBay for a lot, lot less. All the knives and the block are made in China. I was leery at first, but to my surprise the knives have held their edge after much abuse. Razor sharp! br / br / The handle is well balanced and comfortable to hold. I don't know the exact detail of this alloy (301 steel, and 18/10 stainless) versus other brands. Under careful inspection, you can faintly see where the handle is fused to the blade. Thus I know the knife is not machined from one solid block of metal. So their claim is true?! The blade is brittle so try not to bang the blade against a harder material. Over all, I am very satisfied with the set (for what I paid for). br / br /The only "Porsche" I may ever be able to afford in my life... br / br /If you want pure/extreme quality but don't care much about design, get the Global.

These knifes have an awesome design, are light and well balanced. They are so sharp that cutting is really efortless. pThe set also includes pretty much all the basic knives that are needed in a kitchen (except perhaps a bread knife that can be purchased separately).pHighly recomended.
