Great Sharpening Tool June 7, 2008 Stefan Stoianov (blacksburg, VA, usa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received the sharpener in about 4 days with ground shipping. I immediately tried it on my Henkels, it made it so sharp, I was able to cut thin slices, horizontally, of paper with it. Then I started with my cheap knives, which were pretty dull, using the groved side and then the smooth side. The result was a set of pretty sharp , slicer, bread knife, utility, and paring knives.
A Superb Sharpening Steel December 31, 2007 P. Carr 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an essential item that every knife owner must have. It's versatile and fantastic for all sorts of knives, scissors and not just your chef's knives. I primarily use it for my hunting and pocket knives. It can be used to sharpen, hone or realign the blade's edge. There is a smooth side for honing or even realigning the burr during routine maintenance and a ribbed side for sharpening your knives if needed. So if you're in the market for an excellent sharpening or honing steel, get this one and you won't regret it.
Kyocera Ceramic Knife Sharpener October 23, 2007 David Phillips (San Francisco, California) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a really excellent product. Best steel I've ever used and it's not even steel. It also has the advantage of being remarkably light for what it does. It works perfectly and at a very reasonable price.
A must Have for Ultra Sharp Knives February 19, 2007 Doug Longmire (Palmerston North, New Zealand) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
This very understated, plain looking piece of kitchen equipment looks rather like a conventional sharpening steel with a white rod, but is in fact an ultra fine grit sharpening tool. Don't be fooled by the modest appearance - this is a very high precision piece of equipment. For high quality knives (eg Global) that are already sharp, but need that extra finish on the edge to achieve a truly razor sharpness, this ceramic rod is superb. Global actually recommend ceramic instead of steels, and once you use this product you will see why !!! Incidentally, Global also market their own ceramic sharpener, and it's made by - you guessed it, Kyocera. All knives will lose their ultra sharp edge in normal use, and the usual method of refreshing (re aligning) the edge is to use a steel. This ceramic rod takes this process to a new level. The ultra fine ceramic actually sharpens the edge as well as re aligning it. The result is an incredibly sharp razor edge, usually with a few strokes. I have been using it for about 6 months now, mainly on my Global knives, and it is the best sharpening rod I have used - lot's better than conventional or diamond "steels". I recommend using it like a "steel", with gentle strokes alternating from side to side, holding the knife at very slightly greater angle than the sharpened angle. Not just for Japanese knives, this great product also works just fine on European knives. Buy it without hesitation.
