4 out of 5 stars Loose Tea Sippers Rejoice!   August 23, 2008
fredtownward (Palatine, Illinois United States)
Having experienced mixed results with Bodum Pavina 21-Ounce Double-Wall Thermo Glasses (X-Large/Tall Iced Tea) (Out of a set of four I have managed to break TEN of them thanks in part to a long-suffering retailer sending out replacements), I was a bit dubious about the durability of this item but also curious.

Well, after a month of almost daily use, a month during which I cracked the tenth Bodum Pavina 21-Ounce Double-Wall Thermo Glass (X-Large/Tall Iced Tea), the product has survived intact, suggesting that the smaller the mass, the more survivable the Bodum. (However, I only used plastic utensils like a Light My Fire Spork in it.) Even better it works exactly as designed. The large infusion chamber allows for maximum tea leaf expansion, the clear glass sides make it easy to brew to "color", and the infusion chamber stores easily and safely on the upside down lid.

Defects? Well, 6-oz. doesn't hold very much; tea gulpers might prefer something like the 13-oz. Bodum The de Chine Personal Glass Tea Infuser & Cup instead. In addition as others have noted, the lid only fits on top of the infuser so that your uncovered cup will cool pretty quickly after you remove the tea leaves, and finer particles can pass through the relatively large slits in the infuser.

Note: care must be exercised when filling the item with hot water because the tea infuser sits on top of the cup. Overfill it and you will have hot water overflow unexpectedly onto your hand from underneath, which is a good way to end up dropping it.

5 out of 5 stars the tea-addict's crackpipe   August 23, 2008

This fragile-looking device has numerous advantages over other tea-brewing methods. One, it's easy to see to see how dark it's getting. Two, the leaves get plenty of room to breathe. Three, it's easy to brew multiple cups with the same leaves. Four, the double-wall glass keeps the tea inside hot, while the outside remains cool.

Minor negatives: a bit on the small side, but as noted it's easy to re-brew. Several pieces to wash. Very fine leaf fragments will pass the filter -- not really a problem.

4 out of 5 stars For Brewing Loose Tea   August 21, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2CRUNEMS7PI34 This attractive and delicate tea canteen does very well at getting the most out of your loose teas.

I have no complaints against it. You should however be very careful with it as to be sure it doesn't break.

I would recommend it to someone who prefers loose teas over tea bags.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful gift - elegant and useful   August 20, 2008

Spouse has really enjoyed this tea infuser set. It goes well with our bodum glasses. The double wall insulates well. Overall: a very nice addition to our kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars Classic design, lovely to sip from   August 20, 2008
gotta run now (Seattle)
There's more to enjoying a cup of tea than the tea itself. For me, the total experience is enhanced by the cup from which I drink it, the particular variety of tea, the book I'm reading. I do prefer loose leaves to bags, and usually use a mesh ball, which produces a lovely cup of tea. The Bodum Canteen tea cup looked intriguing primarily for its good looks, and the option of a cuppa without the mesh ball.
I enjoy the feel of this cup in my hand, and it is nice to sip from. While it is not fine china, its not clunky stoneware either and is a nice weight for tea. Since I always guage the temperature of what I'm about to drink by the way it feels in my hand, its a little surprising to have such a hot cup of tea while my hand remains cool. It has a lovely aesthetic.
The tea made in this cup is delicious. Easy to gauge how far it has steeped and when its time to remove the insert. Fine leaves do sift straight through and remain in the cup but tea leaves don't float that well, so I didn't find it bothersome. The free floating leaves allow more tea flavor to be released than the mesh ball, where the leaves expand, leaving you with a ball packed with leaves.
Unfortunately, its about equal to the mesh ball in the messiness category. When you remove the insert, filled with wet leaves and dripping with hot tea, its not really that tidy. It is easy to rinse out.
The size is perfect. I like my tea hot and 6 ounces is just about right for sipping before it cools down.
It is dishwasher safe, and stays beautiful without getting cloudy.
A good bet as a gift for a tea lover, or for yourself!
