Beautiful August 24, 2008 essluvr As others have stated this pot is not only beautiful to look at it is also a great cooking utensil. It is my first Staub piece and I am very impressed.
The "Other" Fabulous French Oven July 10, 2008 Melissa M. Bondi (Arlington, VA USA) If you're shopping for enameled cast iron, you already know the rave reviews for Le Creuset - and I agree with them. But Staub is also a fantastic product line, equally gorgeous and with its own long tradition of French-made craftsmanship. I prefer Staub for its black, impossible-to-stain interior finish, super-heat resistant brass/stainless handle knobs and the built-in "doufeu" lid ridge to accommodate ice cubes for even more moisture/basting generation. Le Creuset sells a separate doufeu oven, at more than $250, but it's not a feature of their standard French or Coq au vin ovens. The 5 Quart Round Oven (I have in grenadine) has generous handles large enough to fit four fingers, and the dimpled interior lid well described by Staub literature for optimal internal basting. I bought mine as part of the three-piece set (including a griddle pan and au gratin/casserole.) I said I would re-print parts of this review under a few products (until Amazon determines a better way to consolidate all relevant reviews for comparable items.) If you're in the market for a French oven, definitely consider Staub's features and quality -- you won't be sorry.
Enamel finish subpar to other cheaper altenatives June 18, 2008 Toy T100 (Pensacola, FL USA) Not impressed with the enamel-coated finish; appears to be refurbished or factory-second. Not what I had expected from top of line cookware. Maybe the cocotte I received was a lemon, as most reviewers have high admiration for the fit and finish of Staub. Final purchase price at Amazon was less than $100 with shipping included. While the pits and surface imperfections in the exterior enamel finish may not affect the cooking process, this could lead to more serious issues later in the form of rust or bacteria. So far, the only issues are superficial or cosmetic, but I have requested a replacement in hopes of getting an unblemish cocotte I can proudly display. PS The added bonus; a Staub silicon kitchen spoon and magnetic trivet was a welcome addition at no additional charge, however the value of $45.00 placed on the two items were so extreme honestly I would have preferred them lower the price of the pot then give away gimmicks to make you think you are getting a good deal and to top it off the Trivet you would think would be round like the pot to place the pot on instead it is oval and too small to do a lot with, if the items weren't free you can bet I would have never bought them at that price especially for something that isn't the same dimensions as the pot I am buying obviously I would have bought a round one common sense!
Nice piece. June 6, 2008 C. Brom (Chicago) This is a hidden gem. I searched for a good dutch oven for 6 months and finally found the ultimate with this pot. Perfect for baking bread. Good price too.
Wonderful Dutch Oven! June 3, 2008 macro mama (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received this Dutch oven yesterday. I didn't read the booklet, I just washed it with a soft sponge and proceded to make brown rice mixed with some sweet wild rice in it. I put it on low, covered it and walked away for 50 minutes. I came back to find moist rice that didn't stick to the bottom of the pan. I did not season the pot either, although the booklet says you can. I don't think you have to. It is beautiful to look at as well. You can definitely see the craftsmanship in it. I don't want to put it away since it looks so nice. Now all I need are more of these in various sizes and colors! This will be the first piece of my collection!
