468-42 Moka Brew Coffeemaker - What does the Moka Brew do that drip coffee makers can't do? It uses natural steam pressure to extract the full coffee flavor rather than just heating water and allowing it to drip down through ground coffee. Like an italian stovetop maker, this electric device employs a similar technique but makes it simpler, foolproof. The water heats in the lower chamber. Then begins to produce steam bubbles which rise to the top of the chamber and push the water down. As the water is pressed down, the only way to escape is through the tubes running up the sides of the machine. Under pressure, the water travels up, through the tube and into the filter basket.

Many automatic drip coffeemakers oversaturate the grounds, resulting in flavorless, watery coffee. The Moka Brew aims to avoid fitting into that category by using steam to generate a low-pressure brewing process. The unique design of the Moka Brew makes it stand out next to other automatic drip machines. Instead of pouring water into a tank on the side of this coffeemaker, water is poured directly below a lid that lifts up from the warming plate. When the unit is turned on, steam pressure forces just enough water up a tube hidden in the coffeemaker's frame and through the grounds, which rest in a compact filter right beneath the lid. The result is up to 8 cups of rich and aromatic Italian-style coffee. I like super strong, fresh-brewed French roast coffee, and I have gotten superior coffee from this machine every time. I fill the grounds basket all the way to make about 4 cups of coffee at a time. The moka maker is easy to use, and you don't need a fancy grinder to get good results with it. There's definitely an art to grinding the beans and packing the filter basket, but even the worst pot of coffee from this machine has been good. It's true that the coffee "dies" quickly---the moka is especially good as soon as it is brewed.
I bought this coffee maker several years ago. It broke after only a few uses, and getting it repaired under warranty took over a year! But my appreciation for this machine was renewed after a recent, bad experience with the Cuisinart Brew Central, which brewed bad coffee and was defective out of the box.
This coffee maker deserves 5+ stars because of the delicious coffee it produces and 1 star for the lousy Krups warranty service.

Works as good as all the positive reviews. Very good for day-to-day use. Pretty picky about my coffee. Higher end whole bean, preferably from specific regions, burr grind right before brew. Have drip, press and vacuum brewers. This is the best one of all that I've used myself. Strong full flavor like french press, but smoking hot and almost as convenient as a drip machine. Will save you money long term because for the same or better taste you can use less beans. May not work as well with milder, subtle "breakfast" blends or Kona.

THE COFFEE COMES OUT TOO WEAK, EVEN FILLING THE CONTAINER TO THE MAX, FOR 8 CUPS. DIFFICULT TO REMOVE THE GROUNDS AFTERWARDS.

I am so thrilled to see the Moka Brew is available again. I could not understand why they stopped making it a couple years ago. The only thing that came to mind is maybe some people tried to take out the pot before the pressure was relieved, thereby creating a potential safety hazard...make sure you let it brew completely and don't try to remove the pot until a few minutes after brewing is complete. I love my Moka Brew so much that when I was in search of a replacement pot a couple years ago, I was so disappointed to see they stopped making the complete coffee maker. I even wrote to Krups and was not given any explanation. So I paniced and searched the internet until I could find one, which I stored as "back up". My original coffee maker hasn't failed me yet, so I haven't needed the back-up one, but I am glad I have it. I have been using the Moka Brew for several years and there is no way I am switching to anything else. Once you've found your perfect coffee maker, you can't go back! The pressurized brewing system extracts full flavor from the coffee beans. No other coffee maker has even come close to this. Like another reviewer, I just use the disc style filters for percolators (I am not going to pay the extra $ for Krups special filters-not worth it)...no problem w/coffee grounds in my coffee. You just have to make sure you pack down the grounds lightly before brewing. I do get some coffee "sludge" but that is from the force of the steam and when I use too fine of grounds. When I buy fresh coffee beans, I have the seller use medium to coarse grind, but when I buy coffee already ground at the store (like Dunkin Donuts) I just use whatever it is. If you appreciated a full-flavored cup of coffee, like what you get at a specialty coffee house, then I would recommend the Moka Brew. The $100+ price is well worth it and will give you years of great coffee!
