A Few Quirks, but Happy Overall August 23, 2008 Debby M. Hoarty My husband and I have been very happy with this machine. We rotate through various coffee blends daily, which the unit accommodates very nicely. I hear the Capresso 400 series leaves dome of today's coffee grinds in the chute for tomorrow's grind, but the Cuisinart doesn't do this. Yes, the grinder is loud, but they all are. We have NOT had temperature issues of the coffee, nor strength issues. To cut to the chase, here are the PROs: 1. Thermal Cafe (glass carafes heated by a plate tend to give coffee a burned taste) 2. Burr Grinder 3. 12-Cup Capacity. Though we rarely take advantage of this, it comes in handy when we do. Cons: 1. Grinder can only be set in 2 cup increments. The reason that this is an issue for us is that for a 10-cup pot of coffee, we'd like the grinder to grind an amount in-between what it grinds for 4-cups and what it grinds for 6-cups. I know this may sound like weak coffee to some of you but my husband's German and he, nor I like weak coffee. We feel strongly that you don't have to grind a 1/4 lb. of coffee to get a good pot! If you set the grinder to 12 cups, you'd use just under 1/4 lb. of coffee! This would price us out of our coffee habit! 2. LCD Display. It's small and not back lit. 3. Water hopper is hard to clean. In fact, it may even be impossible. It's tall and thin. 4. Last cup of coffee requires lid to be unscrewed to pour. All in all, we're very happy with this unit. You can pay another $125 and get the Capresso 400 Series, which seems to be the direct competition to this unit, but read the negative reviews first. Though we haven't owned one, the swinging filter basket and the lid valve seem like they can cause major dissatisfaction. By the way, for current owners, we have never had to turn the filter cover dial before brewing. We just place it on top of the filter, swing the filter holder back over the carafe and a motor aligns the filter cover to the proper orientation. I don't know why Cuisinart says to align the filter cover. Finally, if you're not going to purchase this unit, I urge you to read reviews of the units you're interested in. What you want to stay away from are grinder/coffee maker combos that have a design flaw where the steam of the brewer enters the coffee bean hopper. You end up with very visible condensation in the hopper, which must be dried out before the next grind. Though this may be great for grade school meteorological science experiments, it's not great for adults who want good coffee! Our Cuisinart DGB-900BC doesn't do this, but I know its predecessor, the DGB-600, did. My brother has another brand of coffee maker that has this problem and guess what? He doesn't use the grinder that's built in!
Overpromised and Underdeliverd July 10, 2008 Jonathan L. Ransom (lakewood, ohio United States) Product worked okay for a few weeks though (1) it used an unusually large amount of coffee beans, (2) cleaning out the filter was quite messy and difficult and (3) the grinder was VERY load. Then after owning the unit for a little over one month the coffee bean grinder stopped working. I will not buy another Cuisinart product.
Great cup of coffee July 2, 2008 Dom's Mom (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought this coffee maker to replace the older version Cuisinart Grind & Brew. Some notable improvements: - carafe does not leak. The old version would spill EVERY time we poured a cup of coffee. This version does pour slowly, as some reviewers have complained about, but does not spill. You also do need to take off the lid for the last cup, but I still consider that a great improvement. - The bean holder/grinding mechanism doesn't need to be cleaned after every pot. We've only had the coffee maker a month, but have not had to do any maintenance cleaning on it get. - quieter grind doesn't jar you awake before the fresh cup of coffee helps ease you into the morning. The coffee is pretty strong, but you can adjust that by using more water than you set to grind. Not a big issue since we like strong coffee. Overall a big improvement over the old version and the coffee tastes great.
Buy locally cause you'll probably want to return it June 26, 2008 Kenneth R. Harris (Jax, FL) I have returned 2 of the 700 series w/ glass decanter within 1 week, such as heat plate not working, grinder not working. This 700 is a learning experience, rinse out the basket and spin thingy, place back in the coffee maker wet, and coffee grounds get wet, never make it through the tunnel to the basket, and you will get hot water only. Next, make a total mess taking everything apart, unclog the wet coffee grounds and beans, make another huge mess, cuss, and wish you could grab the idiot who designed this. This has happened 3 times in less than a week before I found out to dry everything out the night b4, or you'll be sorry. Sorry design & engineering, IMHO!
Grinder defective, AGAIN June 15, 2008 Marissa Grove 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Well, I did not buy this from Amazon, but I wanted to share my experience with it. I bought this pot back in October from Bed Bath and Beyond. I did not use the grind feature every day, just mostly on weekends, for most of its short life. The grinder ceased function in April, about 6 months of use. Now, I should have known this was going to happen, because a friend of mine had gone through two of them, then went back to the one without the bean hopper, for the same reason. She got hers about a year before me and from a different state. Well, I took it back and they gave me an even exchange. BBB couldn't have been better about it. Anyway, I have had that one for a month and this morning the grinder broke again. It gets a weak and pathetic sound and then you get dirty water out of it because the beans are not being ground. I have never been particularly happy with the way the pot pours, it spills all over when you get to the bottom and the easiest remedy is to take the lid off to pour. I am very disappointed because I do like the machine, but I wouldn't recommend it if you have to take it back every couple of months!
