Amazon.com Product Description
Providing storage capacity of 18 cubic feet, the Atlantis offers convenient features to securely stow your cargo while on the road. The cargo box comes pre-installed with a QuickGrip mounting system so you'll be on the road in seconds, and mounts directly to most after-market and factory-installed roof racks. It not only lets you access your gear from either side of the car using Thule's patented Dual-Side opening feature, but is easy to open and close with an improved locking system that features a user-friendly padded key and readable decal. Thule's built-in safety feature means that the key can only be removed when the box is fully closed, so you don't accidentally lock yourself out. The Atlantis has an eye-catching design, sleek black finish that complements the aerodynamic lines of today's new car designs. It measures 34.4 x 84 x 16.9 inches (W x D x H) and weighs 44 pounds.

About Thule
To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.

By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.

The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

1 out of 5 stars Cradle QuickGrip Part No.05400 NO GOOD   October 4, 2008
Roger W. Smith (Corning, NY)
I have both an Atlantis 1600 and an Atlantis 1800. Good boxes. Problem is with the attach system. While simple, it was probably designed by a Swedish monkey. The part that sits on the cross bar of my roof rack fails at the screw attach point. It is a very weak fitting and held in place by one screw. The monkey would tell you this is not a bearing point for load. Why then does it always fail in this spot?? Get this - the replacement part is $2.60 from Thule direct AND they want $20 for shipping... Now that's a business model!

4 out of 5 stars rooftop cargo box   April 12, 2008

no windnoise when mounted on our safari mini-van. I wish I could have had a way to estimate the size better I would have bought the next size bigger. The carrior has held up fine at 80mph traveling through the western states fully loaded. Maybe 1-2 mpg fuel loss even at 75+mph. Easy mounting but when attached to factory rails fully loaded the metal clamp touches the top of the van roof so I put a piece of weather strip foam under the clamp and that kept any potential scratches off the top of the roof. Very nice product!

1 out of 5 stars cheap plastic parts   December 6, 2007

We only used it 4 times when these cheap plastic cradle cap parts broke. You have to order new ones from Thule's website. I don't think something I pay $500 for should break after 4 uses and then I have to pay to fix it.

5 out of 5 stars Great cargo carrier   November 17, 2007

Absolutely great carrier. Being able to open from either side was more valuable than I thought it'd be. It was large enough to put our large stroller, bike carrier, lawn chairs, folding chairs, and plenty of miscellaneous tools and outdoor toys. I had a few issues tryign to guess if my cargo would fit or not, and had to re-adjust a few times to get the lid closed. Also, make sure you tighten and retighten all the clamps a few times.

The wind noise was barely noticed. All in all I'd recommend to anyone who has a vehicle big enough for it.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Never Have Enough Travel Storage   July 25, 2007

Great carrier. Just took the first trip with it from Winchester VA to Hatteras and it did great. I checked the clamps upon arrival in Hatteras and they were still secure. Although I wanted the larger model this model works the best on a Suburban with a sun roof. (Yes, I measured before buying.) I was also able to put it on the roof mounts by myself (adjust your cross rails to the desired mounting location, open the mounting clamps and put it on).
The recommended load capacity is 110 lbs. I put small carry bags and all the little things you take to the beach in it to free up space for the heavy luggage (and cooler!) in the rear of the vehicle. Amazon had the best overall price thanks to their shipping special on this item. Thanks Amazon!
