Top 50 Things To Do To Stop Global Warming

smazsyr's picture

I like this, from GlobalWarmingFacts.info:

Global warming is a dramatically urgent and serious problem. We don't need to wait for governments to solve this problem: each one of us can bring an important help adopting a more responsible lifestyle: starting from little, everyday things. It's the only reasonable way to save our planet, before it is too late.

Global Warming

Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2008-05-23 12:12.

Hi there, I am going to university to study Climate change and eventually complete my Masters Degree followed by a Phd.

It is important to remember that Science isn't an opinion of one, two or twenty scientists. Science is fact. We all have to understand and acknowledge that everybody has seperate and different opinions, it't the way of life and has been for many years.

The fact is that whilst some people think that Global Warming is totally due to Human mankind. I agree with the commented i am replying to; It is natural that the Earth warms and cools itself naturally it's a process that has been happening for billions of years, thats fact, NASA and the IPCC websites have this information available to everyone on the planet that has access to the World Wide Web and to these websites.

Humans are speeding up the process of Global Warming at a higher rate that we should be. Some statistics such as, there is more Carbon Dioxide in the air than there has been for the past 650,000 years, that is also a fact. Carbon Dioxide allows heat onto planet Earth, but doesn't let the heat back out (Greenhouse Effect), this is one of the main problems today. reducing the amount of Carbon Dioxide would be a start.

Methane also plays a big part on Global Warming too. Methane is 25 times more effective as Carbon Dioxide but does not stay in the air for as long. We should all be aware of the Global Warming process, in which is happening around the world now.

The more Carbon Dioxide we have in the air the warmer the planet will become as the Carbon Dioxide will not let the heat back out. The heat melts the Ice Caps which makes the sea levels rise. Sea levels rise, therefore meaning there is more water in the oceans, the deeper the oceans the darker the ocens become. As the oceans are darker the sunlight and heat is then absorbed in the water, making the water temperatures to rise.

If ice was still there, sunlight would hit the ice and the sunlight would reflect the light back into space, which is what is currently happening and what has happened for years now. As water levels rise, the more land the water covers. I am sure we (Everyone on this palnet) is aware of what i ahve just mentioned. I must also stress the fact, that what i have mentioned isn't the total problem with Global Warming but just a small part of the problem.

We are correct that every single one of us could do something to help Global Warming, some of us are 100% committed to help our planet Earth. Some people think differently and don't want to help. I personally think that us as people of the Earth have to get the Government to help with Global Warming. Yes the Government are very aware of Global Warming but i don't think are taking the measures that are needed to help with the situation that we all face. I can only see that it will get very close to a very big problem and then the Government will take serious action, but it is beyong me why they don't want to take drastic measure now.

This is our planet, planet Earth, why aren't more or all of us onto our Governments to do something about it? The Government are the voice of our country, they have the powers to do something about the problem aswell as us.

RE: oli burn it

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2008-05-20 07:36.

Did you know that the Earth is acutally going to be cooling down over the next 10 years, and that polar bear numbers have increased since 1970's! Annual snow fall has increased in Antartica, and there is not one study that proves that human increased CO2 in the atmostphere has or will warm the planet even one degree. Wanna know the warmest years of the last century? Ask NASA, there scientist concluded that it was the 1930's and not the 1990's. Don't believe the hype of the alarmist.

Ice Core Data Bogus

Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2008-05-07 10:00.

Actually those nerds that drill into ice core samples to examine CO2 levels and temperature change have proven that actual temperature change preceeds increases in CO2 levels. So CO2 levels are not the cause, they are the effect. Make sure to get your facts straight before posting the liberal speaking points.

There is no evidence that CO2 has ever ‘driven’ the climate in the past, nor is there any compelling evidence that it is doing so now.

Global warming is a scare tactic just like back in the 70's when they said the Earth was going to freeze and we were entering a new ice age. Time magazine ran a front page article on the topic. So now we get global warming. A theory that scientist say they can not prove, but it's possible. A bunch of nonsense if you ask me. I just have one question....show me the science baby... Oh yeah.... show me the science. Lets see if it can stand up to redicule. Becuase that's what science is. "The time of debate is over" HOGWASH! That is not science that is typical politics. yes it is correct that the planet warms naturally and cools naturally , and that species evolve behind climate changes and what not. that is correct but WE are causing this to happen at alarming rates and those 3 degrees made a difference the size of texas and california COMBINED and it continues to make a difference , as the glaciers continue to melt in LARGE sizes as the example i just provided for you . They are melting into the ocean making this water UN DRINKABLE meaning that soon our water will become SCARCE because we didnt want to save a forest , plant a tree , recycle , use public transportation or car pool. SIMPLE things like that . its not like people are asking you to cut off your leg or anything that will HARM you in anyway . we are asking you to do simple things that can make a major difference. please do your research before you make any ignorant comments , because the fact the planet naturally changes is true BUT we have caused it to change at much more alarming rates , and people cannot even begin to understand why this is important.without the usage of so much energy global warming would not be happening so quickly , there for it would NOT be a problem it would be a slow natural process , and we would have nothing to worry about , because we would not have affected this in anyway , the planet would just be changing SIMPLE and we would have to deal with it , there would be nothing we could do about it . theres things we can do about it because WE have affected it.

the world will go on without animals

Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2008-03-17 21:41.

Ok so this whole global warming thing, the main idea should really be based on saving the animals i mean the earth becoming warmer has nothing to do with it it's how we pollute our world. For example when you walk out the door these days (and yes winter never went away it came back full blast) to see fresh snow on the ground for sure it will get dirty after a while but the snow begins to absorb the air and all it's toxins and you are left will his black looking stuff. We are trying to save ourselves really the whole point in global warming is to save the human race if you get where i am going with this it's not global warming that is affecting the earth it is pollution they might be mixed together alot but they do not mean the same thing. When we have oil spills in great lakes or oceans who pays the animals they die, and when we throw garbage on the ground and a bird decides to eat it for it's little snack and they choke and die. But that's not because of global warming or anything it's because of the carelessness we human beings have towards the things around us. If all the animals were to die and all the trees were to be cut down the earth wouldn't explode it would still be here it wouldn't dissapear into a black whole the sun wouldn't eat it. The earth would still be here, i mean who's to say all of our technology is wrong not to sound crazy but we should keep living our lives try to help others while george bush tries to keep your eyes focussed on the war (sorry to bring bush into this) remember what's going on behind the scenes and what is really happening or you'll be caught up in the fake world he is trying to perceive as reality.

People are immensely free to act in whichever mannner they choose to destroy the environment. This is a massive group that will not be persueded otherwise by postings on the internet. I can't help but feel that this website is somewhat of a grasp...a desperate grasp for morality. But one cannot escape the hypocrisy of a common man (from a developed nation) who uses oil for soooo many things in their every day lives. It is the key to our occidental life style.
Therefore, I see it as a race. Will the environment burn out before the oil? Will our society live off the land again? Could we still live as harmoniously in this environment?
Or maybe mankind will save occidentalism forever
I hope some genius comes up with a way to turn us all into....spider monkies. Good NIGHT!

Well....

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2008-02-28 11:58.

You're right! It has varied over time. I'm guessing you didn't see Al Gore's an inconvenient truth. It tends to go up and down throughout the years. But if you look at the chart from say 500,000 years ago it is hotter now then it has ever been. In the last 10 years we have had 9 of the hottest years. 2007 being the warmest.

3 degrees is NOTHING. You're right! But say it went up another 1 degree. The process gets faster and faster. The carbon emissions we put off with cars, factories, power plants etc. build up those greenhouse gases making it get hotter and hotter over time.

Maybe the science is wrong. Maybe this is just another one of those times where it's hotter than normal. But how does it hurt the way you live life? If we keep relying on fossil fuels we will still run out. If we keep mass producing cars we will continue to see an increase in temperature.

I don't know a lot on this topic considering i'm only 12. But think, if the temperature has gone up 3 degrees in the last 10 years what will the temperature be like when my kids are 20?

I don't believe this is something everyone will suffer with in the future, we are experiencing the effects of global warming right now in our world today. Polar bears for the first time in rcorded history are downing because they are unable to find land or ice to rest on when swimming long distances. Global Temperatures worldwide are going up, and it is predicted that by the year 2100 water levels are said to rise by 100-200mm. If you refuse to believe the proof that is in front of your eyes, thats everyone's own decision, but i ask you to consider this, what will our world look like when your children grow up? More importantly, will ther even be a world that we can live in???

and if we dont do anything some animals might not be here in the end.. like polar bears which have to swin 50 to 60 miles or more just to get to land..so we dont have to just sit back and ledt nature take its course.WE need to do something before New York and all those cities are under water..thenn what are we going to do still..sit back and what nature takes it course?

It's not the warming but the

Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2007-10-25 14:18.

It's not the warming but the speed in which it is happening that is the problem. Plants and animals have adapted over thousands of years to the specific climate they live in. For example; if you have ever had a reptile or fish as pets, you know that you must keep their enclosures at a specific temperature. too hot or too cold and they will die. Two degrees raise causes glacial ice that has been frozen for hundreds of thousands of years to melt. This water that was not previously in the oceans causes the sea levels to rise. Rising sea levels cause many low lying areas to be underwater. Temperature flux causes the currents in the ocean to shift. It causes storms to gather intensity and be stronger (Think about hurricane Katrina) we're looking at widespread issues here. It's not a myth, it's a "theory" that is based in many many different and widespread scientific observations. And theorys are based on gathering of evidence and facts. And gravity is a theory. This is big.

If this isn't the most idiotic response on this issue that I have ever heard. Al Gore just won the Nobel Prize on this issue. That means respected scientists agree on this. The fires in Southern California and Hurricane Katrina are not isolated events. They are symptoms of global warming. If you knew a click about science and did the research you would find that the human race is indeed in peril. Make no mistake about it, cnn is titling their report "Planet in Peril". I disagree, it is more like "Human existence in Peril". If we do not do drastic measures now, we are talking about in a 100 years time 83% elimination of the human population as we now know it. Much of the earth uninhabitable as well. If you have kids, or are wishing to bring a kid in this world, you must care about this issue because I can not in good conscience bring a child into a world where there will be a lot of suffering. Enough with the Rethugs and the get rich right now scheme. This may all mean not that much very soon. Our existence and privilege to live on this earth is at stake.

Here is what I am going to do, at my job I have the chance to inspire young minds, I am an art teacher. I currently and in the future will talk about things we can do to help, I will motivate my students to treat the planet better then the people around them do. I will teach them how to take responsibility, how to question others, how to respect the planet. And then they will go home and tell their family and friends, and when they grow up they will know that it is right to vote, pay taxes, and reduce any way possible. Along with many other things, but you get my point. It is our responsibility to take action, you have to start somewhere, in your local community or city, earth day is a very easy time to do something. We have to make everyday earth day. What are you going to do to change the world? Talk the talk but back it up too!!

Is global warming really our fault do we really cause our planet to warm ? How is it our fault ?
Is it because we use so much carbon dioxide and we don't have enough trees to take it in or is it the fact that we are chopping down trees which causes the tree to let out all of it's carbon dioxide .
Maybe it is our fault that global warming is happening but there is just one concern for me if global warming goes ahead will it flood the whole earth and will we die ? I am really concerened ? And if so when is global warming actually going to strike out i mean if it happens in the next couple of years will i die at 60 i really want too live too 100 im scared about global warming are you ?Care for your enviroment so we can all live in a neverending world!

it's alright for any of u adults, you'll all be dead when the effects start happening (not a happy thought i know, but true!) its going to be us kids who are effected, our lives that will be ruined, us who has to live in the world that you lot have destroyed. Did you know that the British government dump loads of food in the sea off of Jersey just to keep the prices low? there are people STARVING else where in the world. And look at these facts,
England export 190 000 of fresh milk and import 1 140 000
England export 170 000 of chicken and import 363 000
England export 102 000 of lamb and import 125 000
England export 110 000 of live pigs and import 200 000
What a waste, especially when you think of the carbon produced transporting that lot.
some more facts,
1kg of asparagus imported to Britain from Peru creates 1.4 tonnes CO2 emmisions
1kg of strawberries imported to Britain creates 0.19 tonnes CO2 emmisions
1kg of carrots imported to Britain travel over 6000 miles and creates 5.5 tonnes CO2 emmisions
it's rediculous. please, save the world for our future

TIPS TO HELP GLOBAL WARMING!!!!

II dont know about you guys, but i want to live till im old. Within a few years, the damaging effects of global warming will be too severe to reverse. Shortly after, extreme weather changes and deadly natural disasters will occur. Way worse than hurricane katrina. The world will end soon, within probably 10 years, if something is not done. STOP GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some things you can do to help are
-Turn off computer and television when your not using them
-Turn off any lights that are not being used, or are not necessary.
-replace hthe lights in your house with florescent lights
--Take out unnecessary weight in your care. Every extra 100 pounds uses up an extra 1 MPG.

I've been blogging about communicating global warming to the public, so you might want to check out my most recent comment and then track back to other entries in my blog. Sometimes people deliberately delude themselves because they can't face a reality that calls for their action.

Keep speaking out -- but learn to spell or people will question your credibility.

Global warming is definatly natural in our ecosystem but even if this has occured in the past, you need to look at the facts and before you make the simple coments i have read. Have you not done any reserch? Please do some now, yes it has occused in the past, and yes we have survived it but the statistics are extreamly out of place. For example one peice of imformation i recived was that if we continue on the way we have in the last 50 years, in the following 50 half of greenland is most likely to melt therefor covering all of atlantic canada and killing millions. You may not be arround then, but my generation will and i am very concerned about this (and fyi i live in atlantic canada!). This was not just some random artical posted on the internet, there was a lot of reserch involved and when i get older i would love to proceed with that recherch, but anyway back on the topic. I belive that alot of the poeple are not educated enough on this topic try going onto www.youtube.com and search presentation on global warming. Thank You for taking the time to read this, i will be checking in, in a few days to see hoe poeple have comented :)

But I do believe it is blatantly clear that we are speeding up the process ! There are facts that prove it.. and regardless... it makes me feel better to have lifted a finger and attempted to help slow or even stop the destruction of the current endangered species and my species, for my child's sake, and for their children as well....too much of something is never good.

Pollution + Nature = Destruction of Nature

Submitted by ScienceAlex on Mon, 2007-04-16 18:17.

There are those who, unfortunately, view this significant problem as some bogus natural event. It is true, that the earth may be naturally warming, but whatever the earth is doing, we are still negatively impacting the environment.

This is it in a nutshell. Whether Global warming is bogus or real, there is no avoiding my next statement.

Pollution + Nature = Destruction of Nature

What makes the simplicity of this statement more astounding is that many people do not consider this statement, in its utter simplicity, to be an immediate threat. No other elaboration of this statement is necessary. It is, as one would say it, in simplest form.

Global warming

Lets face it we all know what we have to do to prevent global warming but not enough of us care enough to do anything about it. We may think we are helping just by recyling but there is so much more involved. There is so many ways to help save our planet. But we dont care enough to do anything. There are not enough of us that care. But if you think about it we wont have to be here when the worst happens we wont have to face what this earth my have in store for us. Think about your kids or your grandchildren. We all think well knowone else does anything about it so why should i. But i am afraid that is not the way to think about it because everyone thnks that and that is the reason not enough is being done. We all think our part will in helping save the earth does not make a difference but like they say every penny counts. Every person who helps save the earth counts and if we all stop and think about that for a moment we will realise how selfish we are being. We all need to participate in saving the world. Dont worry about what other people think just go ahead and do it. Think of yout future relatives. What will they think if they look back and realise this is all because of you because you did not do anything when you had the chance. If we dont act now it will be to late. So act now and help put your bit towards saving the planet now before its to late.

this is why urgent or serious.

Submitted by zaxvagen on Mon, 2007-03-19 14:09.

the fact is that the earth has warmed and cooled several hundred times over the past eons, most times with catastrophic effects for life as it was at the time before any major change, there have been about 19 mass extinctions that we have evidence for not just the one that ended the jurasic period but many others, the worst one took out about 93 percent of all spiecies on earth. I digress.

the difference though with previous global warmings and coolings is that they happened far more graduly, and were still bad, we will most certainly learn to live with climate changes but the problems mount up. As the planet's atmosphere warms up the weathe paterns become more severe, more fires, more blizards more floods, higher spring tides, more hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes, heavier seas, the list goes on, we built our cities and countries and everything inbetween to cope with weather from yesteryear, and the globe is destined to get hotter if we don't turn back the thermometer.
so far we are talking about a temperature differance of 0.7 degrees C sounds small but it's not.

the worst will come when sertain ice bridges and bodies in the north pole melt permenently because that will cause ocean currents to change thier patern permanently.

furthermore: stay informed

Urban Warming

Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2007-03-18 13:42.

Its not global warming caused by mankind. It is urban warming from all the roads, building and motors, that generate heat. Natural setting can throw off heat. These manmade cities cannot. Unfortunately most of the people live in cities, so consequently, their perception is not the whole reality. Urban centers (known as heatpads) are warming. The planet is not.

One can argue that we are a part of nature, thus global warming is natural. That may be, but the cost of global warming could be huge. Most people live in low lying coastal regions, If water levels rise millions of people will have to move. Drinking water may be tainted with salt water. Desert areas will expand and places like arizona may not be able to meet their water needs. Buildings built on tundra will sink. Who will pay for all of this. Is this the world we want? If we can do better why wouldn't we. Why are some people against maintaining a beautiful planet for us and future geenerations?

This whole thing about Global Warming is a bunch of bulocks! If you really want to know whats causing the warm weather, it's El Nino! Besides if they say there's enough evidence for global warming there is plenty of evidence to prove global freezing as well. The earth has naturally warmed and cooled it self for longer then we even know. And to say 3 degrees is going to kill us is crazy. The reason we hear so much about this is because of the politics that happen to surround it. Even the news is flip flopping their stories about the truth about global warming, saying its actually El Nino!

Why urgent or serious?

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2007-02-27 07:06.

I don't get it. Why is Global Warming dramatic, urgent, or serious?

Hasn't the planet cooled and warmed constantly over the eons? So warming in itself can't be the problem. Is it warming too much? If so, how much is the right amount of warming? Isn't it natural for intelligent species to evolve on a planet, tapping into hydrocarbons therefore raising global temperatures? So warming is natural, and extra warming is natural. So is it bad? If so, why? Is an average temperature of an extra 3 degrees celcius something that harms us? If so, did it harm the planet when it was warm like that earlier in it's history? Or is it just that we don't like changing the climate? If so, how could we continue to exist in any fashion without having some sort of impact?

If this is a question of the earth being like a park and our desire to keep the park a little cooler, I understand, but that's a preference, not something dramatic or serious. People seem to be comparing the current world with some sort of imaginary world that might exist if mankind wasn't on it. I find that a little sick. And logically impossible. I'm not trying to troll, I just wonder why so many smart people act in a way that I do not understand about this issue.
