Therapy-drug combo best for kids with OCD

Children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) fare best when treated with a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and sertraline (trade name Zoloft), researchers have determined. Despite knowing that OCD is illogical, children and adolescents with OCD dwell or ''obsess'' on unwanted thoughts and perform repetitious actions or rituals in a compulsive manner as a way of dealing with those thoughts. Compulsive hand washing or cleaning, counting to certain numbers or the repetitious checking of household items or belongings are examples of symptoms that might manifest in children and adults with this disorder.

Cognitive behavior therapy effective for hypochondria

Patients with a persistent fear or belief that they have a serious, undiagnosed illness significantly reduced their symptoms and anxieties by participating in therapy sessions which examined possible factors for their fears, according to a new study.
Hypochondriasis occurs in as many as 5 percent of medical outpatients, and can be a disabling and chronic condition. Hypochondriasis generally has not been responsive to psychological and pharmacological treatment and is costly for the health care system, according to background information in the article. Until recently, no specific treatment has been clearly demonstrated to be effective.

Alcoholism drug, with therapy, helps cocaine addiction

Results of a new study suggest that disulfiram, a medication used to treat alcohol addiction, is effective in combating cocaine abuse. The researchers also conclude in the same study that combining disulfiram with behavioral therapy provides more positive results in treating cocaine dependence than disulfiram in combination with another form of therapy. In the study, 121 cocaine-dependent individuals randomly were assigned to receive disulfiram (also known as Antabuse) or a placebo, in addition to undergoing one of two behavioral therapy interventions. Participants received either cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) in individual sessions during the 12-week project. Results showed that participants given disulfiram reduced their cocaine use significantly compared with people given placebo.

Exercise, talk therapy may help relieve Gulf War veterans' illness

Regular exercise and a form of group talk therapy can alleviate some symptoms commonly associated with Gulf War veterans' illnesses, according to newly released results of a study involving veterans who report such symptoms. Fatigue, distress, mental health, and mental ability all improved after three months of low-impact exercise, weekly group sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), or both together. The gains were significantly greater than those made by veterans who were given usual care. Physical function improved more in those who had CBT than in those who didn't.
