Popular sports supplement has no effect on endurance

An amino acid supplement called L-tyrosine, recommended by fitness trainers and sold by supplement outlets as an endurance booster, has no effect on endurance, according to a new Brigham Young University study. "There wasn't any indication from our tests that tyrosine had an effect in the blood or in the brain," said Allen Parcell, assistant professor in the Human Performance Research Center at BYU. "Tyrosine didn't improve endurance performance in our subjects."

Men more dependent on exercise than women

Women may worry more about their weight, but it's men who are more likely to become hooked on exercise, a study shows. College dudes are more likely to exercise to excess --- and get tense and irritable if they were deprived of their workouts. The research among 408 university students also found that men who worked out for the benefit of feeling better physically and mentally --- rather than to look better or improve their performance --- were more likely to become dependent on the need to exercise excessively.

New planet detection technique can spot even small worlds around distant stars

An extrasolar planet has been discovered using a new technique that will allow astronomers to detect planets no other current method can. Planets around other stars have been previously detected only by the effect they have on their parent star, limiting the observations to large, Jupiter-like planets and those in very tight orbits. The new method uses the patterns created in the dust surrounding a star to discern the presence of a planet that could be as small as Earth or in an orbit so wide that it would take hundreds of years to observe its effect on its star.

Study holds promise for stroke, schizophrenia treatments

Researchers have discovered a communication link between proteins in the brain that could lead to improved treatments for psychiatric disorders and stroke. The discovery could create the possibility that new antipsychotic medication could be designed to modify the interaction related to cell-to-cell communication to prevent abnormal activity and cell death.
