Faster than the speed of light

If you can slow down light, would I be able to time when the sun will shine through my window? Or will I see a beam slowly reaching from point A to point B? How can you detect or calculate something going at those speeds? When did someone get the idea to try slowing or speeding up light? Can you slow/speed up other thing such as sound? Any answer would be much appreciated.
