Estrogen may make women more vulnerable to mental illness

For many years I have believed there is a link between my sister's mental illness and hormones, but no one will listen. Instead they diagnosed her as schizophrenic which has been not only a curse, but lead to debilitating meds that did not solve the problem. It began when she entered puberty and we can set our watches by her periods as to when she will have an "episode." As she nears menopause those symptoms have gotten worse, but it will not surprise me if they dissipate once she is through. Has there been any further research on this or better yet solutions to counterbalance the effects? Please advise.
