Why wait for humans to develop non-carbon based life? Nature may have already done so, if only we know where to search for it.

That's one of many delicious speculations in Life As We Do Not Know It: The NASA Search for (and Synthesis of) Alien Life by Peter Ward.

(My book on Astrobiology for young readers does not go that far in its speculations.)
