About us
Science Blog was started in August 2002. It lives, breathes and eats press releases from research organizations around the globe. Most of what you read here are press releases from the outfits named in the stories themselves. Got a news story you think belongs here?
Let's talk.
The other half of the equation is
blog posts from readers like you. So if you have an interest in science,
please register and join others like you in an ongoing, vibrant dialog about what makes the world tick. Meantime, please take a minute to read our

Intense waves of changing pressure move vertically through the water column when the seafloor suddenly dances up and down during potent shallow-focus undersea earthquakes.
The rapid and intense pressure changes can exceed the killer whales' ability to adjust resulting in barotraumatic injury in the head and middle ear sinuses. (diving-related injury)
A blow out of the small air sacs that surround the ear-bones (barotrauma) will not only interrupt diving activity but will also disable biosonar and echo-navigation.
Earthquake injury in whales is relatively common. More likely, the animal recovers after a few weeks on the surface. However, if unable to heal, the whale faces shark attack and a strong chance of running ashore.
Scientists are aware of the earthquake connection but ignore it in order to get $$$grants$$$ from the navy and $$$donations$$$ from the public.
The current scare about the dying killer whales is more scientific baloney in hopes to get more grant $$$money$$$ to "study the issue."
The earthquake data file at the USGS will reveal twice as many shallow earthquakes off the coast of Vancouver Island in 2008 than during any year in the last 50 years. The quakes erupted dead center in the middle of the killer whale habitat yet the scientists ignored them since folks will not donate money if earthquakes are responsible.
Don't let the scientist mislead you!
BTW, this is only my 40th year researching whale strandings!
