Absolute dependence on technology?

Maybe I've seen too many sci-fi films, but it seems like a really bad idea to stop writing. Imagine, for a moment, that we gave up on writing, something interrupted our ability to use the technologies that allowed us to give up writing, and we ended up losing all of the knowledge of mankind. It also leaves the doors open for exploitation through intentional denial of technology... not to say that does not happen with writing as it is, but the potential barriers are much greater and would pose a challenge beyond the social challenges that such manipulations of literacy carry today.
