Why think it's emotion?

Why suppose the emotional aspect of the scene is the trigger for memory (apart from the predilections of the researchers)? I'd wager that the relative rarity of the scene is just as good a candidate. Show people a lime green car with purple polka dots and see how well they remember that as opposed to a normal parked car.
