Actually, several studies have shown that you get the same results on the Web as with more traditional methods. One of them is the recently-published paper from this lab. I'll try to look up the citations to the others and put them in a future post.

It's important to remember that traditional studies also have problems that Web-based studies do not. For instance, traditional studies almost invariably use some form of coercion. Participants are paid, or its a job or school requirement. This means they may not be particularly motivated. Since Web volunteers are not usually compensated in any way, they are more likely to be participating out of interest.
