Good character in children must be encouraged, reinforced and taught by the consistent example of an adult who is committed to doing what is good and right. If children are left to themselves, their natural tendency is to descend into the darkest qualities of human nature. Go visit an inner city ghetto where so many children are left to roam the streets unsupervised. Walk one of those streets by yourself and test your theory of naturally prone kindness.
