I assume they said it in the present. I probably should have used a different example, because the claim that the Piraha speak only about the here and now is something I remember hearing at a talk, but I don't have an actual citation. Which means I might be wrong. It is somewhat complicated because the claims about Piraha change as people study it more. Everett has changed his mind about various claims before.

The aspects of Piraha I will write about in the future (counting and kinship terms) I actually have in my notes, so I'll be on firmer ground on that...
