It may be that its not the too much sleep that causes people to die early, but rather that people who are already sick tend to sleep more... As sickness itself, but also many medications cause a person to sleep more than usual. This could bias the data collected with the primary variables being mortality and sleep. Sick people sleep more, sick people die earlier than those that are healthy (who are more active).
