Bronchodilators and asthma

Although the short and long term bronchodilators do have some untoward physiological side effects, of greater concern would be that their use actually enhances exposure to sensitizing allergens. For example, these drugs dilate airways allowing allergic subjects to inhale more of the allergens that are causing their problems resulting in more inflammation and sensitization. The more one is sensitized the less allergen exposure it takes to provoke their problems. These effects could explain not only why asthma is creating more morbidity but also why asthma seems to be increasing in modern societies.
