Black History Month is coming - Highlight contributions of African-American Scientists

January 30, 2008

Okay, the time is coming when students will be called upon to integrate Black History into their class courses. My one and only pet-peeve with this topic in science courses -- Everyone did a report on George Washington Carver. Now, don't get me wrong, Dr. Carver was a great man and a great Scientist. But c'mon, their are plenty of LIVING Black Scientists in the here and now.

So, if your child, younger siblings, little cousins, students, or other young people you teach mentor or are in contact with have to do such an assignment, please insist that they do a report on someone who was at least alive in or born after 1950.

To get them started give them a copy of People of Color in the Sciences: Astronomy to Zoology.
Also check out Science Spectrum Online, interviews with living Black Scientists on Delta SEE Radio, and AAAS Science Update: Spotlight on African-American Scientists.

That's a GREAT idea...name 5 scientists from every ethnicity...I'll do that as a carnival. My early wager, school age kids would do better than adults, even the scientists.

Great comeback! Not being from the US might be a reason to NOT comprehend cultural history awareness programs, but....no place in this world is monocultural.

Doomed to Repeat

We need Black History Month to remind the black kids of the pride they have in their heritage, and to remind white kids to remember not to screw up like their ancestors (as early as their parents, in some cases,) did. I'll be comfortable in our multiculturalness when the Klan can't find enough recruits to march. By the way, how close are we to a Muslim History Month? Pretty close, or are we not quite ready for that one yet? Maybe in another 40 years or so. While we're on topic, can you name 5 scientists from every ethnicity? That would be a fun exercise. (Rules: you can't choose people from your own institution or company. And all of your Jewish names can't be physicists.)

Huh??

"Because us as blacks all of the world needs to aknowledge the success we had even in hard times.

Not a racist comment. :)"

No, not a racist comment. Is this? -

"Because us as whites all of the world needs to acknowledge the success we had even in hard times."

If you don't see that as racist then we are on the same page. If you do, we have much work to do.

It is American History. In this case highlighting the contributions of African-American Scientists.

Saying that there is no such thing as Black actually is a suppresive stance that doesn't acknowledge diversity or multi-culturalism

I wonder if a post asking people to celebrate or spotlight scientific contribtutions of other groups of Americans or people would be responded to in a similar manner.

e.g.
Women's History Month (March) - Promote Women in science
Native American Heritage Month (Novemeber) - Celebrate scientific contributions of Native American peoples
Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month (mid Sep-mid Oct) - Spotlight science discoveries & research of Hispanic and Latino Americans

excuse me for interfering, i don't live in the US, but frankly it seems to me that the very concept of 'Black History' is racial.

Yes there is Black history.
